Key Fob

So I bought a key fob off eBay for my f30 because it's silver trimmed, which I like. According to search, I need only hold it up to the column with the original fob near and start the engine.

Is it really that simple? I don't need to have the physical key insert recut or anything?

By the way, I'm new to all of this and have been loving this forum. Thank you in advance, everyone.

You need to have the key recut for the glove box I believe. Not sure about coding. From what I understand, a dealer needs to do it because the encryption is protected and needs to go through the BMW servers. I could be totally wrong though.

I have no actual idea, but your proposed methodology sounds a little too easy to make duplicate keys, which would go well against common sense security.

If it's a wiped used fob or a clean new fob this is how you program it:

But if it's a 3rd party fob you've got a BMW paper weight.
