Logic of BMW Packaging

I have a 2016 X1 and just picked up a 2017 430i. I still don't quite understand why the premium package on the X1 includes LED headlights, yet LEDs are only available as a lighting upgrade (separate package) on the 430, which is a much more expensive car. Also, the X1 included the M sport suspension, which comes standard on all X1s. Yes, the 430 is quieter, handles better, and overall has better fit and finish, with a more premium feel, yet it still doesn't come with some of the features of a car that costs over 10,000 less. Not complaining here, just saying.

That's because the new X1 is based on the Mini FWD platform, not a BMW platform like the previous-gen X1, which was based on the 1-series. Content on those vehicles is going to be in line with other Minis.

What you are also missing is that the LED lights on different models are very different. If you read this forum and others you can find that some BMW LED Headlights really suck.

And M Sport Suspension is no doubt much different on various models as well.

I've ordered a MY18 4 series GC it comes with LEDS but if I want ADAPTIVE LEDS I have to pay $2,100.00 because it's part of the technology package. Too expensive if you ask me. I don't care about HUD and side cameras.

I like the non-adaptive LEDs on my X1 better than the adaptive Xenons in the 4. The HUD is great, but the side cameras are pretty gimmicky.

It's mostly just a quirk right now, because the 4 Series hasn't had its LCI. When LCI 4ers start being available soon you should see LED headlights and other features become standard as with the LCI F30/31.

I use the side cams all the time. They are for blind interceptions and come very handy around here.

It's just a business decision based on market analysis. BMW wants to make as much money as possible, so if they determine 3- and 4-series buyers will pay extra for LED headlights, then BMW will sell them separately for what the market will bear. Some other business analyst decided that the X1 needed to include LEDs in the premium pack in order to be competitive.

End of the day it's all about money. BMW is not going to give you anything for free if they believe you'll be willing to pay for it without jumping ship to a competitor. Their reputation and market strength allows BMW to drive a pretty hard bargain for features other marques have to give away for free as inducement.

Agreed. The logic behind auto makers only offering certain options as part of "packages" is for them to be able to sell you additional options you might not necessarily want but are willing to pay extra for in order to get the ones you do. There are many auto makers who simply offer only packages without the ability to select individual options, at least in the U.S., but I see in luxury car brands they usually offer a bit larger a la carte menu. It is all going to be based on their profit margins, manufacturing costs, and market research for each specific model as to which configurations they will offer.

I don't see the LEDs being an upgrade for that kind of $$.....I love my Xenon Adaptive headlights .

It's a standard option on the 40i platform in Canada.

Honestly don't know what all the hype about LEDs is. They are nice but not much different over the xenons.

Just a brighter/whiter daylight over the Xenons. The Xenons always feel kind of yellow after driving the X1.
