Meh. 400hp MQB.* No thanks.

* there is nothing wrong with the MQB platform, but the engine is in the wrong place facing the wrong way.

Had a deposit for a 2018 RS3 and a 2018 M2 and cancelled the RS3 last week...

The RS3 has an amazing engine and powertrain, but the manual transmission, RWD and fun factor made me go for the M2 at the end of the day.

Are the front tyres wider than rear or is it a typo in the review?
I know it is a 4WD front bias transmission but even so it sounds really strange...

Not a typo. Benefits or drawbacks of AWD, depending on how you look at it. Understeer yet huge pull coming out of turns and the incredible hook of starts with AWD and launch control.

Understated looks. Q car/sleeper. Nothing wrong with that as a fast daily commuter. And that's about it imho.

M2=slower=heavier=cheapo interior.

Why fgs did I buy an M2!!!

For authentic driving fun

Cheers

An example of under-engineered chassis for the motor. Now the marketing department will step in and maybe find folks that will pay extra for the power that can't be used unless you are traveling in a ________________________

And the rivalry goes on......it is always interesting to read about the Audi vs BMW vs MB, etc. At least in the last 15 years or so, C&D and R&T,etc have dropped some of their pro-BMW bias. (giving extra points to prior BMWs for 'manufacture rebates' and taking points away from Audis because 'it's too easy to drive fast' both from the TTRS vs 1M article as examples.) I drove the prior gen S3 and it was very nice, but the A4 had the new dash electronics, now it's in the S3/RS3. Those items are appealing to many drivers. Audi put the best electronics in their bottom line cars. Usually the 'goodies' are only in the A8's. BMW does the same thing with better features in the more expensive cars leaving the M2 with less of the electronic joy.

It will be very interesting to see if the RS3 engine has any more Tune in it to be had given it's a 2.5 liter putting out 160 hp per liter! LOL.

Will be interesting to see the track times. I think it might be a huge upgrade from my golf R.
I feel like bmw has anticipated this competition with the m2 CS, which should have 400hp. I would guess that it will push the 0-60 of the m2 below the numbers of the rs3 for bragging rights. That will probably be about it as an extra 50 hp is always nice, but it's questionable if that extra power will really lead to faster lap times.

255 front tires and 235 rears? If that's not a typo, it seems like a band-aid solution to fix an unbalanced, fwd based car.

It is weird, but no different than a car with staggered wheels like the m2. An unbalanced rwd based car lol!

All wheel drive will almost aways beat rwd in 0-60.

I'd like to see a solid comparison between the wider tires all around vs the just the wider tires in the Front! I suspect the wider tires all around would have the same improvement in handling, just more expensive (marginally), so its kind of odd to present the car as such.

Especially with launch control.
The staggered tires are odd. If the car is balanced with the wider fronts, adding wider rears will induce understeer because you reduce oversteer. The problem with staggered tires is the inability to rotate front to rear, which would be a bummer.

Garage List
From the pistonheads review:

Quote:
this remains a car largely dictated by its front end. Despite unique RS3 software for the Quattro multi-plate clutch, despite claims of up to 100 per cent of torque being sent to the back axle and despite the car moving around to an extent on slippy tarmac, the car always feels centred on its nose predominantly.
I'll pass.

The M2 or any other RWD BMW with staggered tires is not unbalanced. They induce understeer for safety reasons with the staggered setup.
Try what most of us do at the track, and throw a square setup on the car to experience neutral handling / slight oversteer balance.

I mean, you say that...but BMW has 50/50 weight distribution and runs a traditional stagger...in part to induce some understeer to keep the lawyers happy.

I say, bravo them for taking another step to minimize understeer.

No different than a 911 using larger rear tires to compensate for all the ass weight.
