Great and impressive car. Maybe I will have to trade in my M2 for it, since I realized recently I am not a very skilled driver.

This RS3 will be a great choice for not very skilled drivers like me

+1.

A 50K car needs to look a lot more balls-ey! It needs the looks to match the sound.

It's a 4 door sedan with an automatic. BORING. The M2 is a coupe with a 6mt. That is much more exciting to drive and to look at.

Audi boasts the tag-line: "The Audi RS models: high performance with motorsport DNA." "RS" stands for "RennSport" ("Racing Sport").

Looks: sorry to say, but when looking at the RS3 exterior pictures - top dog of the Audi A3-series -, my heart rate didn't increase one single bpm, zero dilatation of my iris.

Where Audi outdid BMW (again): available colors and interior. BMW, take notes.

BMW will like the fact that no manual transmission will be offered.

Interesting quote:
"The combination of a small car with a big engine remains a compelling one, and the RS’s 400-hp output is pretty much exactly the right amount of too much. Audi Sport’s head of development, Stephan Reil, confirms that it indeed would have been possible to produce a four-cylinder engine with a similar peak output. (Volkswagen recently axed a mostly developed 400-hp version of its EA888 2.0-liter inline-four that powers the Audi S3 sedan, among myriad other applications.) But Reil says the 2.5-liter straight-five, which is basically a 125 percent version of the four, offers much better drivability: “People buy on horsepower but drive on torque.” The RS3’s maximum torque output of 354 lb-ft is available from 1700 to 5850 rpm and is a substantial increase over the 280 lb-ft of the S3."

It's true. Peak horsepower means nothing as hardly anyone rev their car to the top end to take advantage of the horse power.

"The biggest headline, however, is the launch of the RS3 Saloon – the first time Audi has fitted a transverse five-cylinder unit into such a body style. Proportionally it looks like an older, more compact A4 and presents a tempting four-door AWD rival to BMW’s M2."

I freaking hate the "people buy on horsepower, but drive on torque" line. It's confusing the masses as to the difference between power and torque.

At any given RPM, how much torque you're making is directly proportional to how much power you're making.

For some reason, when talking about top-end output, we describe things in terms of power, but when we talk about the low-end, we refer to out put as torque. Infuriating.

Either say people buy peak horsepower but drive low/mid range horsepower, or that people buy top-end torque, but drive low/mid range torque. There's no reason to go back and forth.

Ultimately, how much power you're making at any given RPM dictates your acceleration...

http://www.caradvice.com.au/535839/2...i-rs3-review/:
"A more contemporary comparison is the latest BMW M3 with the seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. It’s got the same 4.1 sec sprint time as the RS3 and arguably a more spirited engine note than the straight-six-powered Beemer." and, righteously, "Inside, the RS3 feels special, no surprise there. Audi has been doing prestige cockpits better than its peers for years and despite those same German luxury manufacturers lifting their game of late, Audi still has a slight lead."
I want to read glowing reviews about new iterations released by the BMW competitors, so that it induces BMW to up the ante. Make that BMW CS (or 'M2 Competition') the benchmark of its class, the point of reference.

Had a deposit on one. Few things made me pull it to place one on an '18 M2.

It may have an amazing motor and anyone suggesting the N or S55 motors are better are purely fanboys. But I simply cannot believe the car will be any fun. No manual option. And you know that car will understeer like a pig when you can tick a box for tires that are staggered to the front. It's going to need to be totally night and day different than the S3 because I found that car incredibly underwhelming.

The other fact was that the dealer was refusing to budge on pricing. They're acting like this thing isn't just a souped up A3. Just put a bad taste in my mouth.

I had the 2016 RS3, and the engine is a weapon! Also have S55 M3 so am intimately familiar with them all. Love love love the RS3 engine, but S55 is an amazing piece of kit too (but with crappy sound especially when compared to the Audi's 5 cylinder). I'm waiting for the dealers to be realistic with the 2017 RS3 discount before buying one. Will be a perfect compliment to my July build manual M2 LCI.
