New BMW M2 vs Used Porsche 991

I was wondering, which one would you go for?
I am driving 2006 997 C2S now, but thinking about upgrading it.
Have driven E92 M3 and F30 3 series in the past.

I know I am in BMW forum, but I will ask same questions to Porsche forum to see how opinion diversify.

Thanks in advance!

Performance wise, 997.1s = 997.2 base = E92 m3 < F87 m2

What performance criteria are you referring to?

I wouldn't do it. I've driven the 991.2 and it's so good I couldn't do a recent gen car.

However, a 993...

It's a tough decision and one that I thought about. I love BMWs and I have only had my M2 for 1 week, but I absolutely love it. I think a 991.2 is an even better car. I drove a 991.2 CS at the Porsche Experience Center in Atlanta on the track and it was awesome. Loved it. That being said, comparing new M2 to new 991.2 CS, I think the M2 is a great value. It's half the price of the 991.2 and I wouldn't say the porsche is more than twice the car the M2 is. Even a used 991.2 is likely to cost more than the NEW M2, unless you get a very base version of the carrera. I personally would want a 991.2 over a 991.1. I know some people prefer the NA engines, but I like the low-end torque turbo engines deliver (I've kept my 335i). I love the M2 because I'm a BMW fan and it's a great value. I'd take the M2 over a Cayman or boxster everyday... I like having a small backseat for my kids to ride in every now and then. I plan on keeping my M2 for a long time, and maybe in 5 years I can add a 911 to the garage....

EDIT: I've driven a 993 and 996 as well, and although I'd love to own a 993 for various reasons, I'd rather have the M2 in my garage for the weekend fun/track days.

Simple, if you can afford the 991, gor for the 991. It performs better. The M2 will mainly hand it to in practicality. So if you are not using the car as your main ride, go for the 991

You talking about 991 vs m2? In that case no comparison unless you need the space of the m2.

The 991 has very limited space, and isn't very practical at all

Even though I've had my fingers burnt badly with Porsche in the past I'd say 991.2 (the turbo 3.0) which is nice but expensive.

There were a lot of build quality issues with the 991.1,be careful...

I am thinking used 991.1, year 2013 - 2014. It's market price is currently at $60 which is almost close to new BMW M2.
I can't afford new 991.2 now. In that case, which one would you go for?

I'd go M2. Brand new car with 3 years included maintenance and 4 year warranty. I looked at 991.1 cars but even at 60k they were base carrera models with limited options. I preferred the new M2. It should hold its value well, so if in 3-4 years you want to bump up to the 991.2 or even newer porsche, you can. I also don't know if I would like a 7 speed manual. A friend has one and he doesn't like it much. If you're going PDK route, that doesn't matter obviously.

E9x M3 are blowing motors and have major throttle actuator issues. Those are build quality issues to me.

As far as rattles go, we as Bmw owners know plenty about rattles.

I too went to the Porsche Experience and drove a 991.2S and the gt4. My biggest takeaway from the experience was what a great deal the M2 is. It made me love my car even more. The Carrera was definitely not 2x better than my M2. However, I did love the rawness of the gt4 but could not daily that thing. The M2 is a perfect daily for me - puts a smile on my face every time I drive it. For the track - P GT car for sure!

Both are excellent cars, the question is what your needs and desires are. I love my M2, not sure would go with a 991 over it, a buddy of mine has a 991 and its really cool, drives great but when he drives my M2 he loves it also. Point is this is a first world problem. Can't go wrong, just have to decide what works for you. For me its hard to beat the usability of the M2, fold down the seats and you have significant space to haul crap, great ergonomics and by premium german sports car standards a relatively low price.

I looked at Porsche before buying a M2 (mainly the Cayman/Boxster) but also considered used 911s. When you find a M2 at MSRP, it will likely be at least 10k cheaper and a M2 will also have the huge benefit of being a brand new vehicle (warranty, maintenance, no previous owners, etc). After having a Z4 as a second car, it really does help me to have a legit back seat (whereas the 911 is a back seat in name only). The only thing not mentioned so far is crashworthiness. I know Porsche puts a lot into their occupant protection, but there are no independent crash tests of their cars that I have found between NHTSA, IIHS, EuroNCAP, and ANCAP (only the Macan SUV has been tested with EuroNCAP). The 2 series is a top safety pick plus with the IIHS:

997.2 is what I consider to be the last of the traditional 911's. I know the 991.2's are way better but I prefer the 2011/2012 .2's.

Having tracked 911's in the past, I know I cannot personally afford to keep one as a Queen/weekend DE car. The M2 is so perfect for that, though. It's a really solid platform. If you switch over, there are 911 specific traits that you will miss like hell. But currently there are no catastrophic issues in the M2 like the 997.1 RMS/IMS issue. If your car has PSE, you'll miss the sound and the spot on steering.
If you're not going to do much track...2012 997.2 GTS is your girl. IMO.

Either way, a good place to be.

What's your reason for upgrading? It isn't immediately clear to me there is much of an upgrade 997.1 S to a 991.1 base. How about going to a 997 TT instead

I sold my F80 M3 to get a 996TT, and am trying to get some seat time in an M2 to see if its possibly a good next car after the TT (my current thought is probably not, since I am loving the old school feeling and the modding potential of the Mezger engine, but who knows)

It's not even close. I've had both. The 991 is a special car. If your budget allows, get one.
