Anyone Buy/Sell a Used M2 in a Private Transaction

If so, what did you pay/sell it for? I'm trying to get a sense for how much these are actually selling for in the used market, not what people are asking for them. Thanks

I don't think many members have sold them (hell, we barely just got our hands on them!) but I know of one example in Canada that sold in the used market, almost $15K above MSRP (basically MSRP + the 13% or so sales tax, so they recovered all their money).

They sell for whatever someone is willing to pay at the moment. I don't think there are enough used cars sold to set any trends.

Are you buying or selling?

I purchased from a forum member. '16 LBB, 6MT, Exec w 7,000 miles for $50K. Perfect condition.

For me, living in SoCal, I got a screaming good deal bc our local dealers are the ones still marking them up $10k-$15k. I also got to avoid 8.5% sales tax, so it was a win/win situation all around.

Seems like a great deal! But I but there are more stories out there like you. Lots of cars listed for premiums but they don't seem to be selling.

I thought you had to effectively pay the "sales tax" as part of the fee for registering a vehicle after a private sale?

(You do in Texas).

Yeah, in Nova Scotia Canada too... they get the sales tax as many times as it changes hands. So this means here that you can immediately kiss the sales tax portion of the purchase price goodbye in resale value.

Rats - Guess I'll have to buy new in Germany then I've never heard of not paying sales tax anywhere in the US though, new or used.

In AZ the big advantage of private party is no sales tax whatsoever, just regular registration fees. This allows private parties to charge slightly more. I don't know of any M2's sold private party yet so I can't add to that part of the conversation.

To clarify, I did pay sales tax, but in South Carolina the max is around $600. If I bought from a CA dealer, I would've had to pay the full 8.5%

I think the sales tax due in CA depends on if you are a CA resident or not. If you are, then you're required to pay CA tax when you register the vehicle in CA. If not, then you pay the tax due in the state in which the vehicle is registered, presumably your state of residence. I don't think a CA resident can register a vehicle out of state legally.

I think there are some military exceptions as well.

Yep, this. It's based on where you register not where you buy. If you are charged tax in SC ($300 is the max, btw) and then you go register in CA, because the car didn't change hands, you can show you paid the tax in SC and they will subtract $300 worth of tax. States are different so check with your local dmv.

There's a rule for neighboring states to SC where you wouldn't be able to get this money subtracted but that obviously wouldn't apply to you.
