I'm looking at 2 cars. One has your standard 18 inch tires. The other one says, " P225/45R18 Fr & P255/40R18 Rr Mixed Perf "

What does that mean? Different tires compared to the front and back?

It just means you'll receive whichever summer tire is available in the factory for your build at the given moment. It does not mean mixed brand or model tires.

Salesperson just text me pictures. The front are 245/45 and the back are 245/40 (or vice versa, not sure). How does that affect performance?

Garage List
It should be 225/45 in the front and 255/40 for the rear. That applies to 18 and 19 inch diameters.

A wider rear tire means more traction and stability in the rear when cornering.

So "mixed perf" setup is actually an "upgrade"?

Staggered (mixed) tires will slightly increase understeer, which is preferred in emergency situations - like having to correct the vehicle from a slide - but most drivers will not experience the benefit.

"Mixed" is BMW's terminology for staggered tires. In other words, the rear tires (and wheels) are wider than the front tires and wheels. "Perf" generally means they'll be a performance summer tire, not an all-season tire.

In the case of 18" wheels, the standard staggered setup is 225/45R18 on the front with 8" wide wheels, and 255/40R18 on the rear with 8.5" wide wheels.

This is considered an upgrade (by BMW) over a square setup where you have 225/45R18 on the rear as well, because it looks much more aggressive. Whether you consider it an upgrade or not depends on your preferences.

It means wider rear tires BUT...if this is the factory installed option with summer tires (not dealer installed), it also means an increased speed limiter. Standard is 135 MPH, mixed tires raises speed to 155 MPH.
