M2 vs 718 Cayman S Track shoot out Autocar UK video

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com

I'm not even going to have a gripe that it's a silly comparison as one's a dedicated sports car and the other a four seat daily driver. What I take away from this is the fact the M2 needs to go outside its category to find defeat and even then at the hands of one of the best drivers cars being produced today in any category... Just another feather in the M2's cap imo

Seriously? They are in the same price range, I don't see how M2 goes outside its category to find defeat.

I'm sure many people cross shop M2 and Cayman. And TTRS.

In the US, the M2 is priced well below the Cayman S. I paid 52.5K for my M2 and I bet you that after similarly speccing a 718 CS, it comes in at $20K over that. Maybe base Cayman is in the same price range, but after adding any options, the Cayman can get stratospheric in price.

Plus the Cayman is a true sports car (2 seater), where as the M2 is more of a Sport coupe (4 seats).

Going to watch this video after I post but, I would l like to comment since I was luckily enough to get invited from Porsche to track the new models which included the 718 and 718s. First I want to say the 718 drives so well that not many cars can compete being a joy on the track more so than the 911 I feel. The 718 S model I felt a bit of turbo boost which I did not like on the track but would appreciate on the street due to the increase torque. The standard 718, I could not even tell it was turbo.

I may get flamed for this but just like my GT4 the M2 is more fun on public roads. I don't know its due to the quicker steering, lower limit or feel fast and aggressive nature at lower speeds.

The 718 is very fast in the corners where you really cannot do on public roads. The M2 you can wiggle the rear end with a little throttle and like a little toy that does 9/10 of what the 718 do. The FR cars are just fun and MR cars are just perfect and fast.

For daily driving fun I'd say the M2 not to mention more utility.

the summary of specs at :30 seconds into the video tells you why they are being compared..

BMWs usually fight above their " weight class"...

the 46K 1M was compared to the 76K Cayman R, Audi TTRS, and Nismo 370Z.

The $52K M2 has been compared to the 1M, the $64K Cayman GTS, $66K Cayman 718 S , Focus RS, and will likely also be be compared with the 2018 Audi TTRS.

They should compare it to the recent Camero/Mustangs. Same price point and they are not just muscle cars anymore since handling is much improved.

718 Cayman S is such a great car, no sarcasm.

Only two things come to mind why I'm not choosing it
-Sound/4 cylinder engine...
-Looks. M2 looks way more mature/macho eyecandy(I'm not talking GT4 here)

That's all folks.

Cheers

There is a brief comparison with the GT4 & M2 towards the end of this video. (begin around 11 minute mark)

Besides what others have pointed out, in my case (Australia) the Cayman will cost you between $25000 and $50000 (20-40US) more than a fully specced DCT M2.
Furthermore I'll refer again to the 4 seat daily driver vs 2 seat dedicated sports car.
Clearly outclasses its direct comp hence the need to vs it against a purpose built sports car.

Perhaps the chubster is a better driver.

methinks a car swap would have been in order to remove an obvious variable

A 718S is $161,000 before options in Australia. Throw in PASM, PCCB and sport chrono, sports exhaust, a couple assistance packages, to get a car like the one in this test, and you're probably closer to $180,000. That is a lot of cash for a 4-cyl car, almost $80,000 more than I paid for my fully optioned M2, and all that gets you is a not very special Porsche. I can't argue with the handling, It's really great. Couldn't Porsche have just turbocharged a 2.2l flat six? With such small pistons they could have a high revving, low capacity turbo engine that would be efficient and sound great, as well as being a throwback to the 2.2l unit used in the 70s. I mean, just listen to it.

The M is more practical.
I would like to see it on track next to the RS3 Sedan.
Porsche Cayman is a sport/ track dedicated (with some options added) car.

In my market, 718 cs starts at 50% higher than m2. On top of which, there aren't many boxes to kick for m2 but easily you can end up with a CS that's close to 2 times as expensive as m2. We call that a different catagory.

really? Those rear seats are only marginally more useless than what you'd find in a 911.

This is a BMW forum so people are going to come up with excuses why the M2 is a better car lol. "The 718 s is a track/street car and M2 is a DD." SMH The 718 is a great DD and the M2 is a MOTORSPORTS CAR. The 718 is a PORSCHE. Porsche's are undeniably one of the best handling cars, most fun to drive, and have exceptional build quality. Just sit back and accept the fact the M2 was beaten and stop trying to come up with excuses and trying to defend it. Oh and the Porsche will definitely get you more pussy than the M2.

Must say that both cars, currently M2 as my previous 981 CGTS are both eye candy to anyone.

I`ve never seen so much attention to these 2 cars compared to al my previous ones.

People almost falling of their bikes, people getting neck distortions just by keeping to look at these cars, people giving Girls smiling @me, while mostly they don`t look at me at all

Anyway, these cars do have the looks..............
