Windshield replacement options
So a stone from under a SUV ahead of me flew right into my windshield and boom,- I need a new windshield.
I haven't called my insurance yet but believe they use safelite. Question 1: do you know if safe lite installs BMW original glass or their standard aftermarket brand? Question 2: I m in Stamford CT. Do you know a technician who is good at safe lite over there? My brother had a rear do doe installed on his car by them and the job was done ugly. My m had head up display if it matters....

Safelite doesn't make glass, but will install either 3rd party aftermarket, OEM (original glass supplier to BMW) glass without Roundel, or could source windshield from BMW and install that glass as well. Call insurance first and find out what your coverage options are. Also, insist that they use all new gaskets, as they are likely to get torn up during removal. This does matter - you pretty much need either OEM or BMW supplied windshield. Do be very explicit in making that point to your insurance company. a

My dad had a rock chip in his 4 month old M5. I remember forcing insurance to go through BMW to have the windshield fixed. I told them the car cost $115k and I was not going to go through Safelight and they had to cover it if I took to BMW.
After some back and forth with the manager they obliged. My dad uses AllState I believe. I use Geico for my M3, not sure how they would respond if I made the same request. Never hurts to try though, this is your baby.

FWIW, had my 2016 M4 front windshield replaced about 1-1.5 months ago. At that time, there was nothing else out there other than the official BMW glass (sourced from dealer as the glass places and Safelite had no one else with the glass), so that had to be it.

I just had mine replaced a month ago and both the repair shop and my insurance told me that there are no aftermarket solutions yet, and that I'd get the BMW tagged Pilkington glass.. which I did.
