Camera failure!

Has anyone experience this as yet? Yesterday was a very hot day and it seems like the camera malfunctioned due to heat. The temp on the cars temp gauge was reading about 97°. My iPod also malfunctioned but that's normal and expected for something that wasn't designed to be outside.

I've heard of the iDrive screen shutting down from high temperatures but not the camera itself. I guess with having a black car and living down in south Florida that might just be something that you may have to live with, but definitely bring it by the dealership and see what they say. I have a feeling that they might just tell you the same thing I did, or they may just replace it once if you can replicate the issue for them.

Did the error clear once you cooled the car down?

Yeh about 10mins later when the car started to cool the collision and lane departure systems were back online.

That seems to be the same case with the iDrive screens shutting down as well, once they cool off they come right back online.

I have a feeling this is something you may just have to live with with having a black car in the "Sunshine State" unfortunately.

I had this happen twice on my 328i (grey interior) when I was parked on a steep driveway without the sunshield up on hot summer days. This probably caused more direct sunlight to hit the black plastic back of the display overheating it. After driving a bit, the display came back.

Ric, is the car tinted? To minimize that heat a bit?

This happens on all cars equipped with this technology, we get this all the time here in AZ with my wife's Accord. She drives it the most but she says she gets that alert almost everyday during the summer. The Accord manual actually states this will happen and gives a warning to not rely on the system during really hot days when the camera has had direct sunlight on it. I suspect I will get that on my M2 also. I will have to wait till next summer to know because my car is sitting at the port waiting to get on a ship.

No not tinted as yet but will soon. I was thinking about going a little dark on the tint but I'm going to go full legal but most likely carbon tint. Cops have been following me trying to pace me for speeding. One pulled me over and said he pulled me over because I was going a little fast and I responded but I was driving at the speeding limit, he ran my license and told me to have a nice day.
So def don't want to give any other reason to get pulled over.

Up here in NJ any tint on your windows from the front passengers forward is illegal, but you can go 0% on any other windows which I think is absolutely ridiculous. All my friends tell me to get the car tinted, even with having a gold PBA card with my name engraved on it, I don't ever want to give the cops any reason to pull me over in the first place, so I just go untinted. I've also noticed that going from Estoril Blue to Alpine white that the car gets WAY less hot in the sun, but that also might have to do without having a sunroof this time as well.

So yeah I don't suggest ever doing things to your car that give police all the reason they need to mess with you for no reason. Good thinking on your part
