B58 Engine: please post your experience, including problems / resolutions

Can owners of B58-equipped vehicles post their experiences: problems, noises, concerns, dealer responses / resolutions? It would be helpful to start a thread for existing and soon-to-be-owners.

I have had mine for almost a year. There aren't any huge glaring issues yet out of the box. But I doubt it's been out long enough for us to know any weaknesses

Bought mine in October 2015, sitting at ~7600 miles, and haven't had any issues. Haven't experienced that "engine squeak" from the faulty tensioner (?) that some folks are talking about. I believe mine was assembled in Germany.

Haven't really come across anything specific related to B58 that is an issue, but its pretty early in teh game still.

I've had mine for almost 11 months and have 7600 miles on the odo now. Below are the issues I've had so far:

1. Wind Noise: Whistling noise since day 1. Took it into the dealership and after keeping the car for almost a week, they fixed it by adjusting the door striker.

2. Coolant pump leak: With less than 6 months of ownership and less than 5000 miles on the car, the coolant pump started leaking. Diagnosed as a faulty pump seal and pump was replaced. It took the dealer 3 whole weeks to fix and return the car as the pump had to come from Germany.

3. Instrument cluster freakout: Happened a couple of weeks back and appears to be more common. Refer this thread for more information.

Had mine for almost 2 month now, with 5600 kms (3480 mi) on the odo. Had a few problems so far.

1) Muffler rattle- exhaust valve was rattling apparently due to moisture, replaced a new muffler under warranty.

2) Gear shifter malfunction - got a screen on my iDrive for a Gear Shifter Malfunction that went away immediately. Brought the car into service and BMW ordered a new shifter. A week later, the screen came back on and was brought back into service. A mechatronics unit was ordered and currently waiting for the part.

Someone correct me, but I was under the impression the transmissions (Auto/6spd) were the same from the previous n55's?

I believe the 6spd is mostly the same but got an update to include automatic rev-matching. Not sure about the 8AT.

The N55 powered 335i F30 has the ZF 8HP45 and the B58 powered 340 has the 8HP50. I think the 8HP50 can handle more power/torque but I'm not positive.

No issues here on the B58 engine except the 'stumble' or rough idle after initial start once the RPMs go below 1000 and how the engine acts like its a cold startup everytime the car is started, regardless of how warm the engine is.

Only oddity I've notice is high rpm on start up even if I turn off enter the store and come back out in less than 10 minutes starts around 1500rpm and I wait till it drops to 600

If sitting in park for a long time it vibrates a little for a few brief moments

No leaks or oddity yet I'm at 8k

Heres one reported to the DOT 07/15/2016:
SUDDEN ACCELERATION - ON TWO OCCASIONS (JUNE 12 AND 27, 2016), WHILE SLOWING AND COMING TO A STOP (ONCE TO PARK AND ONCE TO STOP AT A RED LIGHT BEHIND ANOTHER VEHICLE), THE CAR BUCKED AND REVVED AND WAS INCREDIBLY HARD TO CONTROL, LURCHING FORWARD. ON THE FIRST OCCASION IT LURCHED FORWARD AT A HIGH RATE OF FORCE AND HIT A FENCE AS I WAS PULLING IN SLOWLY TO PARK - I COULD NOT CONTROL IT WITH THE BRAKE UNTIL I PUT IT IN REVERSE; ON SECOND OCCASION (2 WEEKS LATER), I WAS ON A CITY STREET SLOWING TO 5MPH AND STOPPING AT A RED LIGHT AND SUDDENLY WHILE I WAS FULL FOOT ON BRAKE THE CAR WAS REVVING AND BUCKING AND I COULD NOT CONTROL IT UNTIL I THREW IT INTO PARK. FOOT HARD ON THE BRAKE THE WHOLE TIME. BOTH TIMES DRIVING COMPLETELY STRAIGHT AND VERY SLOWLY INTO THE STOP. THE CAR HAS LESS THAN 1500 MILES ON IT. IT IS AN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION, WITH VARIOUS TRANSMISSION STYLES - THE FIRST TIME IT WAS IN "SPORT" TRANSMISSION; THE SECOND IT WAS IN THE DEFAULT ("CUSTOM"). ON JUNE 28, I TOOK IT TO THE BMW DEALER. THEY HAVE NOW HAD IT NEARLY 3 WEEKS AND HAVE NOT TOLD ME ANYTHING, OTHER THAN THAT THE SOFTWARE IS BEING ANALYZED IN GERMANY AND SOMEONE FROM BMW NA NOW HAS MY FILE.

Any luvin for these computerized cars?

You had the older coolant pump correct?

I have had some issues with mine as well, most notably the fuel tank replacement at the VPC and then having some EVAP parts replaced due to a CEL at 3900 miles. I've also had the stumbling problem as well, but haven't had it in a while.

Here are some of the threads I've made regarding these issues:

No issues with the B58 engine, nor with the car itself. Enjoying it.

I've only got ~750 miles so far, so it's still way early, but the only issue that I've had so far is that the roundel fell off of the rear deck. Apparently I'm not the first to report this.

Is the rear roundel attached by some glue-based compound?

There are just two grommets/sleeves that slide through the holes in the sheet metal. It sounds like they have been cracking - the roundel I think just has posts that fit through them. Not sure if there is or was supposed to be any sort of glue or adhesive.

Same for me. 2017 340i with MPPSK with 1K mi. picked up 2 weeks ago. I have the same rough idle. It seems as though the engine shakes the car side to side 3 times and then it stops. Only does it on cold start. I was told the RPMs acting like a cold start every time you start the car is normal. None of this bothers me as I'm just trying to make it through break-in so I can really let her shine. Car is an absolute beast and I'm loving every minute of it
