Price proposition of MY2017 M2 vs E9x M3?

I'm cross shopping the 2017 M2 with a 2012-13 e92 M3. While the M2 is priced pretty aggressively at 53k msrp, it's still the very first iteration of the M2 and I was wondering if these will take a hit when we hit the LCI models

I did the same when pricing was first announced. Any new car is going to deprecate the moment you drive it off the lot. While those first few M2's will hold their values for some time and maybe not take a big depreciation hit initially its just a matter of time and I suspect that once the M2 is more available we will see depreciation. I don't know that the LCI will have a big impact unless we see a bump in performance which certainly is possible but probably not terribly likely because much more performance and the M2 bounces off of the M3/M4. There isn't a good financial argument to be made for any new M car so I just look at is from the perspective of the car I want and can afford and decided the M2 was what I want the most.

I agree with pruettfan. If you make it about economics, it is tough because no one really knows and there are so many variables... depreciation, warranty/reliability costs, operating costs, etc, etc.

I have owned both cars (2 E92 M3's and the M2). I would have a hard time going back to the E92. Not because the E92 isn't an amazing car... because it is... but because it is old technology, a dated interior and the M2 feels far more torquey around the city. Once you get use to instant torque, it is addictive. The M2 is a faster track car than the E92 M3, as fast in a straight line, handles better (arguably) and is 2016 technology. It also has a warranty if that matters.

To me, if I ignored the economics (because there are so many variables, if's, and's and but's) and picked what is, IMO, the most fun car then I would pick the M2 again. Everyone is different but that's where I'd be.

This should be more a M2 vs M3/M4 thread as those two cars are in similar price points. The e9x is a much cheaper car and you will definitely money in your pocket.

Depending on the version lol, there are a few hopeful e92 owners listing 2012-2013s in the high 40's to mid 50s, i.e. not far from an M2, and certainly closer than what people are asking for used f80/f82's. However you also have to consider availability. It's hard to get a M2 today without paying a markup without already being on a list, so again not quite apples to apples unless you planned ahead or get lucky. Now if you drop to a 2011 with a few more miles then you can be sub 40's easily which is a good bit below the M2. If I had 35K as a budget of course I'd get an e90/e92. With 50K, I'd splurge and go to an M2.

Nearly everything BMW has a LCI.

But if you look at 1m which doesn't have one, m2 probably will do better than most of other BMWs.

Buy and enjoy the E92 now. Buy and enjoy the M2 in 4 years. Always a better decision to let someone else take the initial depreciation hit!

Wasn't the 1 Series M Coupe already on a 1-series LCI car? Just look at the tails on the 1M - they match the LCI 1er, don't they?

Well the F8x is quite a bit more expensive and some of us have no interest in that package.

The E9x M3 on the other hand has a few downsides when compared to the M2 but it is $10-15k less expensive for a nice specimen. So to me when you start comparing the M2 to old M3 it really becomes a net tie in the end and you have to decide which one is right for you. I really want to get back into an E9x M3 because dammit that engine is some serious level of special. However, I know I'll miss the torque and I do have concerns about having a $20k engine grenade on me (ie: rod bearings). So is the M2 worth $10-15k more? That depends on the individual.

The M2 will depreciate eventually and IMO will be just like all other M cars once the LCI and CS come out.

A 4-6 year old E92 M3 might be less expensive to buy but everything else is a lot more expensive. Insurance, maintenance, no warranty (ie, more expensive if/when it breaks down. Which it eventually will because it's old.), fuel...

With interest rates being so low it makes the finance cheap so a few more thousand dollars won't affect much on the total cost of ownership.


I dare to say that an M2 is actually cheaper and less risky to drive than an old M3. For sure here in Sweden. Maybe also in the US? Don't know your insurance fees and your fuel costs are a lot lower...

Every time my dealer touch my E90, it cost $1k+ and I never had anything major repaired.

Stop taking your cars to the dealer when they're out of warranty.

And there's nothing "special" about the 10w-60. Stop buying it!
