M2 versus used Cayman S/GTS

I have my name down for an M2 allocation for early next year, but I was wondering if anyone here with an M2 chose one over a lightly used Porsche 981 S/GTS and could offer their thoughts. I'm looking for a daily driver that I could take to HPDE/the occasional track day. The back seats aren't an issue. I've test driven an M235 and enjoyed it, but obviously finding an M2 to drive is quite difficult.

I had the same dilemma. A big problem was that the Porsche dealerships I visited in my area were so unhelpful/disrespectful that they made me not want to give them my cash. BMW could not have been more accommodating and two seats were going to be a pain for me so the M2 was an easy sell.

However if you can get a GTS with the options you want I would take that over an M2. Just based on how it drives and the quality of the product.

I'm comparing these too. At this point I'm thinking the torque of the M2 will be more fun on the street than the lightweight mid-engine dynamics and NA engine in the Cayman. And for me it would have to be a GTS which means ~$30k more for a used car. If money doesn't matter it's close, but given the considerable cost difference I'm leaning towards the M2.

Same issue I'm dealing with. A six cylinder Cayman S is looking better by the day. But I already own a 911 (930, actually), and another car with no real back seats either (Jag XKR), and I'm coming from an e36 M3 I loved, so I'm hanging on...at least through the next round of allocations.

Depending on what you liked about the M235, though, having driven both cars I can tell you that if you liked the M235, you will like the M2 more

I sold my Cayman GTS for the M2;

I did not like the way the GTS steerded, to much resistance due to its caster. The midengine layout only shines when you push the car to its limits, the M2 will load up quicker at lower speeds.

I also had troubles with the sportseats +, cramped seating position.

But is was a fast and fun car, briljant PDK, PCCB brakes, the PSE noise, oh man need I say more...

The M2 and GTS are cars you must have both IMHO, you can not compare them.

I want a Cayman again, a GTS or GT4 (718), hopefully 6flat again, with 18-way electric adjustable seats, the steering in the 718 has already improved, I liked it far more better than the 981 CGTS

That dude has some serious cajones!!!!

Love the GT4.

To the OP - both the M2 and 981 S/GTS would be good choices, just will have some different characteristics. The 981 really comes alive above 4K RPM, where the M2 is at full torque @ less than 2K RPM. So the "rush" is going to be a little different. Not a bad problem to have.

Nice driving, obviously goes there a lot and knows the track well. Its a long way from where I am but I have often wondered about the best way to experience the N'ring. Anybody done the instruction days that BMW run there? If so please comment for me.
Cost? one day? open trackday or tourist day how is it run?

Nice driving.
Particularly like the part where you blew by the new GT3 RS. (Money doesn't necessarily equate to driving skill)

I would nearly go back to a manual if the M2 gearbox was as good as that.

How about a 2011 boxster spyder? Same money as a new m2 and you can actually buy one now

That driving was insane. Very fast lap. The ring is tricky, some curbs you can cut and some you can't he knew every one.

My god if a Cayman GTS is on the table why on earth are you cross shopping an M2?! Have you driven one? They are phenomenal.. and two seater btw. No compromise there.

If you don't need back seats…get a Cayman GTS! Awesome car, nice 3.4 engine and more pure then a M2. If you have the money; get the GT4

Well, the M2 is by no means slower, it`s different of course due to to turbo drive.

The M2 has a faster, better and quicker steering rack, I can tell by my own experience , also the M2 is loading more quickly at far more lower speeds on the front axle. The front end grip on the M2 is phenomenal.

The Cayman GTS is a good car, but has to driven at the limits for satisfying driving fun.

I turned in my Cayman GTS.........for an M2

Yes it is a good car, but not perfect, it has it`s flaws !

-Steering is major issue on the 981

Why has Porsche made the steering rack on the 718 10% quicker?

I know the answer.

I'm with them ^^

If you don't need back seats, get the Porsche.
I had a lowly '07 CS and it was a FANTASTIC driving car. More utility than you might think. If you get the sport exhaust you will crave that top end. It also has plenty of grunt for an NA car, much more than, for example, an E9x M3.

Engine might feel more flexible but 987.1 was much than e9x M3 (look at 1/4 mile trap speeds) I owned a 06 Cayman s and multiple e9x m3 in manual and dct. Also I thought my Cayman actually understeered too much stock (not enough camber)
