Brake squeal
My brakes just started squealing when I come to a stop. I've read that this has happened to others and BMW does not consider it a warranty or maintenance issue. My car's brakes function perfectly. They just squeal when I come to a stop. Very annoying.
Questions: have any of you been able to get your dealer to fix this under either maintenance or warranty? If you did, how did you talk them into it. My wife says if I can't get them to do it she will go down there. I'm trying to save my dealer from my wife. Any help is appreciated. |

The simple way to fix it is some of this on the back of the pads:

I had same issue with my m sports brake. Took it to dealer last week and they cleaned the brake by scraping the edges and then treating it with some chemical. So far it is working fine and no squeak. But I heard some other people who went through this process got the squeak back within a month. Keeping the fingers crossed.
Anybody tried the spray listed in the post above me. Please share your experience. That might be interesting if it works. Talking to the dealer, it is common problem with performance brakes and they don't seem to have a solution for that. |

I'll see if the dealer will do something when I take it for service. If not, I'll try the spray and see what happens. |

I have standard breaks. Mine started doing it when it had under 500 miles. Took it to the dealership twice. The 1st time I was told that this is a known issue & there isnt any fix for this. The second time they fixed it but it returned in a couple of days. Have learned to live with it

It only happens to mine after a rainfall or when it's cold. When it's cold, until warmed up, the squealing doesn't go away. After rainfall, it goes away after the rain dries off from the rotors.
It's because the M-sport breaks have more performance geared pads, so this is a side-effect. Any "treatment" will be temporary, unless you swap out to different pads entirely. |

Just like Paul e says---It is from riding them in traffic...find an open stretch of road. Then "bed" the brakes by going to a complete stop from as fast a speed as possible.

Stock pads have metal backing and 99% of the time the squeal is caused by fast vibrating metal on metal (back of the pad and the metal "hook" parts of the pad against the metal parts of the caliper). Get some anti-squeal like some of the folks referenced above. Super easy DIY. I recommend you let it sit for at least a few hours if not overnight before re-installing the pads.
And I doubt most dealers would cover this under warranty. Here's a DIY video on changing pads. You'd follow the same process to put the anti-squeal on your current pads. The other option is to drive it like you stole it and wear down your pads if you're still under free maintenance and just get the dealer to install brand new pads for you. Just be sure to schedule your visit in advance and ask your SA to have the technicians prep the pads the day before with the anti-squeal. The stuff dries to make a non-metal membrane between metal parts. The longer you give it to dry, the longer the stuff works and doesn't wear off. If you let it sit overnight, you should wear through completely new pads before the stuff ever wears off and you hear squealing again.
