I'm in the process of installing a Bimmertech Premium Audio system to my car (base stereo), and I was wondering what this is?

Whatever it is I have to partially undo it to get one of the floor panels out of the way so I can get the amplifier in place.

I thought it had something to do with the boot opening and closing mechanism but it doesn't seem to make any noise when I open and close the boot door.

Probably explains why I couldn't hear anything when just opening and closing the door but not locking it

Anyway, it's a royal pain in the arse to remove as one of the supporting bolts is right in the back behind the unit itself. You can just about remove the floor panel to gain access to the amplifier area with it in place but ideally I'd like to remove it if possible during my install tomorrow.
