Laserlight isn't NHTSA, it's FDA that holds them up. They give type approval since lasers are considered a medical device in the US.

DOT/NHTSA Appropriations Committee approved the proposal to significantly reform FMVSS including Lighting last month. Full details will be published for the public toward the end of the year and go into effect during 2017.

DoT approved the Remote Parking option for US cars a couple of months ago.

Is this initiated via display key?

Currently it utilizes the display key, with app integration coming soon (along with more extensive operation). Existing vehicles can be upgraded but no date of release for this has been finalized.

After seeing the Tesla summoning (parking into/under trailer) not sure if I'd advise my better half to use this feature.

The current functionality of the BMW System is rather basic; suited for forward and reverse movement in a tight space. Remote Parking requires active input from the operator while in use, otherwise the procedure stops. The hardware can support more advanced autonomous maneuvers, but is not programmed to have them active at this time.

The recent incident with the Model S and Beta Testing Summon feature, is about 50/50 fault between Tesla and the operator. Tesla's hardware is not as advanced and at the time of the incident, most of the safe guards could be (and were in this case) inhibited. What warnings remained were ignored by the operator. The software has been updated and requires operator input.
