would I be happy with a 328i
m sport with track package?
I use to have a 2000 m roadster and I would auto-x and track it. I really want to get a m3 or m4 but 70k+ is hard to swallow. should I get a 328, 340 or go m? |

Drives: ordering a 2018 M3
^^So did you decide? If not and you're financing, you should look at the 2 series as it has a lot better driving dynamics (I hear) for less coin. That being said a 328i is still a fun car. If power is super important you can get a JB4. |

You'll get opinions all over the place here. Just head to a dealer, try on a few different models, and make up your own mind. Don't test drive anything you're not financially comfortable with, unless you're open to CPO.

Depends on what your looking for in the car, Im very happy with my 328i esp with a tune.. What I miss is that smooth inline 6 ( the sound ) other than that for power / balance etc as long as you get a sport package car and the options you want I dont think you will be disappointed.
Go slightly used ( 2015/2014 ) and save 1/2 the price for the same car, I got lucky the one i picked up looks brand new and I got for an amazing price. You will be happy with either model though as long as its sport pack

Get an M2 or an M3 with no options if you are looking for a BMW sportscar with 2 of 4 doors respectively. From an M roadster you are not going to get a similar experience otherwise.

the 2er is a little small. I want to fit a kid in a car seat in the back with luggage for 3 peope for long weekends.
I'm going to test drive a 335is as well as a 328 and 340 both with m sport and track package. then ill take a look at the m3 and m4 to see if its worth the extra coin. |

The base M3 is very sporty and if you don't need extra tech, you get a lot more sportscar than a sport optioned 340 for not too much more $$ Last edited by metallicpea; 05-16-2016 at 11:16 PM.. |

You already answered your question. You need a F– 80. I find my 340 is a slower than a leaf or Prius I can't even imagine getting anything slower.

A 340 is slower than a Prius? Maybe if you dropped them out of a plane because the Prius has a better drag coefficient.

And a modern 328i performs almost as well as an M car from over a decade ago, if not quite as visceral and engaging. Give them all a test drive and you'll know which is right. |

the 328 is out, just due to the fact that you're looking at the other two and the engine/exhaust sound of the N20 is poop. i haven't driven a 340 or M, but read and watched numerous reviews of each. since you are considering it and have the resources (you can afford it) i say just go straight forthe M.

In other words, based on some expectation that I assume you have from this statement, what might be more helpful is that I do not expect the track package will not be what you are hoping for. Although more info about how you plan to use this car might be helpful. If just for family trips, than sure, you'll be fine. If you expect it to ride and handle like an M roadster, then no, probably not.

The m3 could easily end up being double the price of a 328 ... I have a 2016 328i, 6mt, m sport, track handling package I took it to my first autocross a few weekends ago Loving the car and the performance It's quick and nimble Would an extra 100 hp and the inline 6 in the 340i be nice? Sure But it would have cost another $10k and required ordering it to spec and waiting Would I love an M3? Sure. But that's about $30-40k more than my 328i |

That could actually argue in factor of the 328/340 if you are just street driving |

Dealerships have 340s that have the track package for test driving , when this happened?
As I pointed out earlier, buy is much horsepower as you can afford. It's well worth it. You don't want that leaf getting that hole shot and cutting you off. Hate it when that happens. I really hate those leaf, volt and prius drivers. |

I've owned both f30 328i and f80. Hate to point out the obvious, but there's no comparison. I liked my 328i, it had nice low end torque, handling was very good, fuel economy was awesome. It was a fantastic DD.
f80 is financially unjustifiable purchase. You're paying extra for the pure driving pleasure. Test drive both and see what's more important to you. Keep in mind that once you go "M".....

Get a SIX CYLINDER......I have a 2013 328....do NOT like the engine although it pulls well and has great HIGHWAY mileage....not that great around town BTW....(22-23mpg ave).
You MUST get M sport or ANYTHING that does not have the std super soft floaty boat suspension....I am hopefully swapping out the shocks this weekend for Bilstein B6s all round....std springs. |

A small part of me thinks I should have gone with a GT4 (and not turned down the MSRP allocation I sourced) in order to have a car with limited/no depreciation, rather than F80, which will definitely depreciate |
