Just got pulled over.

Put some E85 in and was going to do a pull on Map 5 and driving about 50ish on a straight area here by the bay where I do that stuff...was approaching the turn-around where I usually hit it and a motorcycle cop was in the other lane....then he flipped a U-turn and lights came on. Went into a parking lot and he pulled beside and asks, " So, your late for work?" I said, "I'm not going to work." And he says, " you were driving pretty fast."
I said, "how fast was I going?" He says, " you were driving 60 and it's a 40 zone....I'm not going to write you a ticket but slow it down."
I said, " thank you I appreciate that."
So, much for the pull...then when I was driving back he cut me off. No worries.

Was he traveling in the opposite direction, or parked on the side of the road with radar/lidar?

He was travelling in the opposite direction..it would have been hard for him to tell exactly how fast I was going but it still would have been a pain in the ass disputing as I was going over the limit--I was going at least 10 mph over the limit there...it's a little two lane road with a slight bend and that's why I did not see him from the start.

+1.

Out of curiosity, do you live in a state where law enforcement officers can use a visual estimation of speed for a citation?

That conversation would have gone down a little differently in Virginia.

Yeah, I'm in CA so they can but do I want the headache of contesting, right?

You know, here's my take and probably many will dispute this but here is my take: He had his lights on and I pulled over right away and I am a mature guy, with my son in the back seat and my car which I washed and polished today looking perfect.
Maybe he thought, well the guy is just driving his car and having a little fun and he is polite so lets just give him a warning. He did say, "if someone pulled out in front of you from the side it could have been bad." And I said, "yeah your right."
I was hardly in any kind of dangerous spot( well nothing is dangerous about it as it is a low traffic straight away and the weather is great) as I was not even at my pull spot yet, but he did have a legitimate position. Let's just say, I bet if I was 20 years younger and doing the same thing in an EVO it would have been different.

jgoens - glad to hear it was catch and release. I accidentally buried a CHP explorer the other day on a 30 to 80 pull (he wanted the merge and i don't think so) and afterwards he drove up, gave me a smile and raced off. that was awesome. i thought he would pull me over, beat me unconscious, and impound the vehicle. i was lucky.

I am 22 so I don't mess with law enforcement. It's bad enough I drive a bright blue car anyway haha.

Got pulled over by DCPD the other night for having not having front license plate. He let me off, obviously just really bored since he went around a full block instead of doing a u-turn to get behind me.

If he can't tell how fast you were going then how could he stand up in court and establish that you were exceeding the speed limit? All's well that ends well, but he was likely just flexing his muscle.

Many states allow officers to cite you based on a "visual estimate of speed".

No, I agree completely. Had I been in your shoes, I would have done exactly the same.

There's a bunch of people that have the hero complex and want to be the 'great' traffic court defendant... God bless them.

True that. NC too.

Glad you escaped with a warning. Now go do your pulls on long freeway on ramps or out in the desert. Lol!

You and your crazy cops and Im glad that those "half-god-manners" wouldnt work into Germany.
Aside from that, what I didnt get from your post was the fact, has he really cought you driving a bit too fast with prove or has he just the feeling from seeing you that the speed was "felt" too high?
Into last case its his turn to prove his statement or I'll go my way...

Just like anywhere else, it depends on the cop.

I've gotten pulled over for going 90 mph on an empty 4 lane highway when I was a dumbass in HS testing out a new cam I had installed.

The cop lectured me on how much trouble I could be in, then urged me to drive fast at the track (there was one literally 10 minutes away from where I was pulled over), complimented my car and wished me a good day.

Another time I got a ticket for going 79 in a 70 on I-81, that cop urged me to just go to court and that I'd probably have the ticket dropped due to my clean driving record because taking a day off work and driving the 8 hours round trip to fight a traffic ticket was worth my time.

You didn't get a ticket - smile and carry on with your day, and feel thankful.

I'm not sure this 'visual estimate of speed' would be accurate while they're travelling in opposite directions.

Sure, but from my experience, VA state troopers generally do not f* around, and have no reservations handing out court summons for reckless driving when you're just going 76 in a 55. Nor do their judges have any reservations about sending people to the slammer for these kinds of "misdemeanors." Consider yourself lucky.
