M2 vs. Alfa Romeo Giulia

http://www.bbc.com/autos/story/20160...ling-guilia-qv

Lighter than the M3 and in fact, 40 kg (88 lbs) lighter than the M2, with 503 pure-italian-Ferrari DNA infused ponies... Is is the one then?

Down sides? the car seems to big for my taste, price may be significantly more than the M2.

Thoughts?

Pass. I don't want a 4 door plus i saw this car at an auto show, can't stand the isosceles triangle front.

I wasn't aware they have a ZF 8 speed option until check out that BBC article. If they solve the reliability issues, Giulia certainly stands a more attractive car than M4/3/2 to me.

I love Alfa's historical connection with Ferrari and some vintage Alfa's in general, I find this a great car vs M3/5, beautifully shaped , a mini Maserati so to say.

BUT I don't believe the weight of the car, unless there is some real life proof.

Even GT3/458/488 weigh more than advertised.

Cheers

I looked into this car very much! Its great..but no M2 competitor..4 doors and 70k...seems more like M3/M5 level. Plus..fiat...historically they have had SO MANY mechanical issues.

This car is the epitome of sizzle rather than steak. There is no way it weighs what they claim with fluids and a driver. There is no way it is 13 seconds (IIRC) faster than an M4 around the ring. If head to head tests prove me wrong, I will happily buy one (when the lease on my second car is up, wouldn't swap an M2 for it). I want these claims to be true, but they just can't be.

In Canada it also costs $40-50K more than an M2, so while I love the looks and sound and Alfa-ness of it (I have a soft spot for them), the price difference is just outright dumb.

I personally despise the way this thing look as much as the new Lexus ISF. Front reminds me of an owl, and rear looks like a carbon copy of the Mazda6. But like I said in the M3/4 subforums, the more performance sedans, the better (especially when they are offered with MT)

If anything, I'm more interested in the Jaguar XE-R if I was looking to buy non German.

I was in a lineup at the Maseratti Laval dealership before going to M2.

The GM indicated pricing starting in the high 70's, with a regular (i.e. most common options) Giulia QF going for around $95-100K.

Giulia QV is the only car that I would consider other than my M2, if I needed the extra space I would be all over this car.

The only weight that we can trust is the German official weight. And the Giulia QV is 100 pounds heavier than the M3 (with standard equipment). Note that the M3 in Germany is very basically equipped whereas the QV has far lesser options. See below.

EU Weight (Weight of Car with 90% fuel, 68 kg driver, 7 kg cargo) for Giula QV (as per the german brochure): 1655kg or 3649lbs

EU Weight for M3 (as per BMW Germany): 1610kg or 3549lbs. M3 is lighter by 100lbs.

But this needs to be taken with a grain of salt as manufacturers always put the weight of their cars WITHOUT optional equipment. For example the M3 in Germany comes with 18 inch wheels (19 for the Alfa), does not have sat nav, premium sound system, memory seats etc which add to the total weight of the vehicle. The Alfa does have them all as standard...

Don't be too excited about the Julia QV. First reviews show:
- that this is - felt - no 500 hp car.
- built quality at present is questionable (no wonder - it's an Alfa and brand new)
- high boost turbo motor has a lot of lag in lower revs

I wouldn't be surprised if it's faster than a M4. The M4 is already the slowest car in its class around a track. Not that hard to beat.

Do you think it's 13 seconds faster? 1 second slower than a 458 Italia?

I want that too, but much like getting my wife to wrestle 1996 Salma Hayek in a paddling pool full of baby oil, I have to accept that some things just aren't going to happen regardless of how much I want them to.
