M3 / MSport Steering Wheel - Takata Air Bag Recall Confusion.

According to the BMW website, most F30s models need their Airbag replaced. They also list all M3's as needing airbag replacements.

EDIT: Many of those needing replacing are actually the 4 Series Coupe, but the M3 is what catches my eye.

I have a M Steering Wheel/Air Bag on my 2013 and my VIN still says there is no recall on my Airbag.

Why would ALL M Steering Wheels in the 2013 F30 not need replacing if all the M3's do?

It just seems very strange that they would use different inflators in F30 M Steering Wheels and not in the M3

I actually replaced my steering wheel with an M steering, how do I find out if the airbag in the wheel is included in the recall?

According to http://blog.caranddriver.com/massive...vehicles/#list:

* 2000–2011 3-series sedan;
* 2000–2012 3-series wagon;
* 2002–2013 3-series coupe and convertible;
* 2001–2013 M3 coupe and convertible;

...and according to the BMW press release (albeit from February) http://www.autoblog.com/2016/02/11/b...akata-airbags/:

* 3 Series Sedan (incl. M3) 2006 – 2011 132,845 Feb 2005 – Dec 2011
* 335d Sedan 2009 – 2011 4,160 Mar 2008 – Aug 2011
* 3 Series Sports Wagon 2006 – 2012 3,270 Jun 2005 – May 2012
* 3 Series Coupe (incl. M3) 2007 – 2013 129,515 Apr 2006 – Jun 2013
* 3 Series Convertible (incl. M3) 2007 – 2013 99,810 Nov 2006 – Oct 2013

I don't see any F30's? It's also important to stress, given the enormous scale of this recall, that older (9+ years) vehicles in warmer, more humid climates are far more susceptible to the ruptures.

The key I am looking at is the M Steering Wheel in the F30 - as all M Steering Wheels would assumed to be the same.

From what I understand, they have not yet released the additional models from the May 4th update.

Took my E93 M3 in for the recall but dealer won't have part replacement, question why sent out the notice but no spare part for repair.

I can't answer your airbag question, but M Sport steering wheels and actual ///M steering wheels are not identical.

E92/93 ///M3s were produced for the 2012 and 2013 model years. F8x ///M3s and ///M4s were not produced until the 2015 model year.

So the F8x M3/4 are not affected by the recall then?

By law they have to notify you of the recall. They can pass the buck on the lack of the part to Takata.

At this point there's no indication any of the F3x/F8x models are involved.

That's my understanding as well.

I *believe* the last cars with the problem airbags (at least when it comes to BMW) were in the 2013 Model Year.

Then what kind of M Steering Wheel was put in 2013 AND 2014 F30 models?

A completely different one than that in the 2012-2013 M3, hence the absence of recalls for all f3x and f8x models at this point.

The M Sport Steering Wheel in the 2013-14 F3x is the same (except for a couple of trim pieces and stitching) as the 2015 F8x wheel as well as any 2014-on M Sport BMW (excluding the X and Z models) if I'm not mistaken.

Hope this helps.

EDIT: Just saw the AutoBlog webpage that is linked to in post # 3 which pictures the M Sport steering wheel used in the F3x at the top of the page. The pictured steering wheel was never actually used in any of the affected models listed, hence some of the possible confusion.
