Drag Race: BMW M2 vs Mercedes A45 AMG

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com

Venue : Cape Town, sea level

Quote:
In the acceleration-obsessed world of drag racing, one aspect of a car’s setup is often crucial to victory: all-wheel drive. Sending power through all four wheels significantly aids traction and helps the car move quickly off the line in those all-important first few seconds of a quarter mile drag race.

Which makes our latest drag race very interesting; although these cars have similar levels of power and torque, the BMW is rear wheel drive while the plucky A45 AMG, now with even more power after a facelift, is all wheel drive.

With the odds stacked in the AMG’s favour, would the latest M car from BMW be able to claw back a victory in tough conditions?

Interesting,I feel that the amg is going to be the default choice in these sort of shootouts on the Web.

The Bimmer did better than I expected from a standing start but as always these drag races don't tell the whole story. It would have been more telling if they had conducted a rolling start at say 30 mph and take it from there.

My gut reaction tells me it would have been more clear cut if this was the case.

Looked pretty wet... I'd like to see this on a dry run.

The AMG is only fast when using launch control. Car and Drive got a 4.2 0-60 but a 5.7 5-60 which isn't all that great. I don't know what launch control is like in the M2, but it doesn't do much, if anything, for the M235i. Only revs to like 3k. Maybe the DCT in the M2 will yield better launch control results, but I've always found that useless anyway as I'm not going to be reving my engine on the street, so in the real world rolling start figures are a more accurate indication of what daily driving will be like.

I've test driven the gla45 and felt it to be quite underwhelming from a rolling acceleration standpoint. The 2016 models appear to have much nicer interiors and a better programed transmission, but they are also $60k which is too much for a hot hatch to me.

The AMG with its AWD took off like a bat out of hell. But the M2 caught up with it. After 62 mph the M2 would leave the AMG behind. And quite honestly a 0-60mph sprint is really useless.

Both nice cars but the 45 got the edge off the launch and the M2 had to play catch up so with all that said both cars are dope but the M2 is pretty serious lol.

Seeing this race again on a dry day and both cars with mods will be nice.

I think we can all agree that the M2 was at least the better looking of the 2

Yup, let's do this test in the wet shit weather, AWD VS RWD and post it on YouTube for everyone to see. Why not do it in snow too for fuck sake!

M2 would have won if it had M mirrors.

Well technically, it would have lost by more

Anyways, wet track, AWD vs RWD.

Not surprising. Actually, it's surprising that they tied. One-hundredth of a second is most likely within the margin of error of the produced results.

Really? Why is that? Because our E92's would not win against a C63 in a drag race either. Doesn't mean I'm going to sell my car....

Since when is losing to an AWD car in the wet by 0.01s shameful?

Actually I feel the opposite, this is quite great. RWD vs AWD wet track, and a perfect tie. The Mercedes should be embarrassed.

Why are people upset? M2 is clearly faster, for a RWD to claw back to even despite being out-launched with AWD it means the M2 has a higher trap speed and is the faster car.

Looks like I'm going to have to sell mine now. Wet traction is a must as I live under the sea.
