interior rear-view mystery

2012 328i. The interior mirror has three buttons on the bottom. What do they do?

The one on the left is for the search function on F30 Bimmerpost, the one on the right is to access the owners manual in IDrive and the middle one is to open the garage.

That's how mine work anyway

And when you press them in certain order for different length of time, combined with your Nav, it will indicate the specific location of a pot of gold.

If pressed in the right sequence you can summon the mothership from Close Encounters.

The buttons are for activating HomeLink items, like garage door opener, electric gates, or lights.

Whatever you program them to do. Usually to open your garage door. Google "Homelink". Or

I had the same tech on my 2000 Acura TL....

What else isn't helpful is to be new on this forum (of all places), and start a thread asking the Internet world what 3 buttons on a mirror do.

We now have Google, heck, maybe even Siri could answer this.

Take some time and read around here for a little while first. People here can be very helpful and knowledgeable. However, if you come with mess, make stuff up, or ask obvious questions; people here can be jokers, jerks, and even mean on the rare occasion.

You'll be alright, but even if you don't own the car yet, the manual can be downloaded. We suggest reading it cover to cover. Most of us did, and read it happily because we're the car obsessed!

AMEN.
Most of us have, surely, read it cover to cover. Sometimes I still just glance through it to find something new, or cool. Love my manual.

When I sit in my car, there's a large round object that partially blocks the view of the gauges. What is this round thing for? Can I remove it?

Yes, doing so will make for a much more thrilling driving experience. After you remove it, you can use the three buttons on the rear view mirror to steer the car...

I have the manual, both printed and downloaded. I thought those buttons might be covered in a section that had something to do with mirrors, like maybe a memorized setting for the mirror's position. On that issue, I was wrong, and now that it's explained that they have some other function, I see where they are discussed in the manual. I mistakenly thought a simple question would elicit a direct, polite answer. My mistake. I'll leave this forum to the superior snobs, such as yourself. That's the point of your post, right? -- to make me recognize your vastly superior knowledge and to make sure I know my place.

Don't let the door hit you on the a$$ on the way out. If this, or any other owner's forum, was just a series of inane questions that could easily be answered by reviewing the manual or a simple Google search, none of us would have this "superior knowledge" you speak of, because the forum would be so bogged down with crap, no one would bother.

Take care.

The trouble is, this is exactly what has happened with this forum. It seems to me that every second post is some BS question that has been asked a thousand times before or could easily be answered by using Google.

Let's not assume what the forum is for and it's not for. OP had a question he wanted to ask, If people dont have the time or patience to answer then don't.

Wow, lots of jerks here. Guy has 12 posts and you're on him like fuzz on peaches. Brave, too, trashing someone on a forum that you'd never do in person.

I guess it would have been too much to just answer the question politely.

Kind of agree...better way to have put it, is answering the question and then following with "it's all in the manual."
