430i or 440i or 435d

Hi all, i'm considering purchasing a bmw 4 series gran coupe...But i'm stuck between the following choices:

430i + MPPK vs 440i vs 435d.

My understanding is that the 430i + MPPK will provide better sound and similar (If not more?) bhp than the stock 440i. Is that correct? I believe this option might be overall cheaper than buying a 440i too.

I'm more inclined toward the petrol engines because they house the newer B-engines which makes buying the decision a bit easier given that the LCI is likely to come out next year which will probably contain newer engines across the diesel range.

My case for the 435d is that it'll offer better mpg but then it'll be more obsolete due to the reasons above.

Or should I just somehow be patient and wait for the LCI?

Appreciate if I could gather your opinions on this matter so I can make a better judgement!

(i'm from the UK but I thought i'd get more responses here than in the sub-forum).

Cheers all!

I own the 435d, and well ... you guessed what my take on this would be.

However, seeing that you place a lot of importance on the sound, I can't recommend it with a clear conscience.

It's actually one of the things that I really miss from petrol engines

On top of that, the BMW bastards didn't give us symmetric tailpipes. Because reasons...

That said, the torque that you get with the diesel is awesome.
Add a Stage 1 on it and you'll be getting into 4.3-4.5 seconds to 100kph.

Also, waiting for the (diesel) LCI might take some time. I honestly haven't seen that many comments on the upcoming .40d.

Personally, I'd go for the 440i LCI version unless you can get a great deal on the last pre LCI model.

there's talk of steering improvements (at least for the 3er LCI) and that's always a nice to have

not sure how pricing is in the UK, but in the US the GC overlaps with M3 if the GC is highly optioned and M3 is relatively stripped down. Could be worth a quick look to make sure there aren't any promos on the M3, give that you are going for top of the range gas motors anyway

I didn't know that performance kits weren't out for the new petrol engines...damn! But I guess they'll be coming soon.

To be honest, i'm not one of those sound-enthusiasts. Sure it sounds great but I would overlook it for overall performance/driveability.

The 3 Series Pre-LCI is a fair bit older than the current 4 series which is relatively recent-ish too. I would be very surprised if they did much steering improvement? Only time will tell I suppose.

This is difficult.

435d on the assumption that your driving contains little stop-n-go traffic. I only say that because generally you don't want to short cycle the DPF of a big diesel.

I've owned a 335d (M57) and it was a lot more fun to drive than my 435i w/mppk. The performance specs between the M57 and N57 are about the same but you'll have the superior ZF8hp.

The only thing 'special' about the B-series engines is that the gasser gets a closed deck block and therefore can theoretically make more power than the open deck N-series.
