Audi RS3

So Audi announced an RS3 to compete with the Mercedes CLA amg model. Is BMW going to counter with a 4 door M2?

Audi and Mercedes should first produce a manual version of those cars.

6MT is a unique selling point for the M2. Though BMW should have offered the possibility to toggle in the settings between rev-match on/off in any mode (Comfort/Sport/Sport+/DSC OFF). Cayman GT4: just push the "Sport" button to toggle rev-match on/off.

For a 4-door: F80 M3.

If they did it would probably be at least 2 years after the introduction of a base 2-series four door.

Don't forget rear wheel drive. The M2 does not really have any competition.

The CLA is garbage you really need to start looking towards the C450AMG or C63 to get a decent car.

Drove the current RS3 a few months back, wow. Really fun car. I'd prefer RWD M2 but since I'm doing just one car for now really need AWD.

I would love an M2GC, but I doubt it will happen.

400hp in RS3 guise...Hell yes! If I can't get an M2, I might wait for the '17 RS3 or S4.

I'm right there with you. I just hope pricing is announced on the RS3 sooner rather than later. My M235 lease is up in a year but with the pull ahead may need to make some decisions end of this year. Right now the short list includes RS3, 435 or 440 GC. Slightly longer list includes TTS (most impractical of what I'm looking at), m235 xDrive (boring bc basically same as what I have now) and S4 (think too big).

I am pretty curious about the RS3 and RS4 (will be a while) since I am still debating a 4 door. Won't be M2, RWD type fun, but it is an option. I always thought that Audi RS and even S line cars are really nice looking. Anyway, will be nice when the RS3 is finally official this year. I think the S3 looks great, so the RS3 in sedan form will be tempting.

The new A4 came out, anybody have any idea if an RS4 might come to the US?

The RS3 is official. August 2017. RS4 is not on the roadmap through 2018 so perhaps after that.

And that it is a coupe - small, RWD, MT option and a coupe. In this price point, there's absolutely no others with that combo.

I think if you look at every individual aspect of a car in a vacuum then you can claim that the M2 because it's not identical in layout to the Audi. Realistically, people will absolutely cross-shop the M2 and the RS3 (and probably the TT-RS as well) since they'll be at similar price points with comparable missions so they'll be considered competitors, just like how the RS4/M3 (previous generations) and RS6/M5 were competitors.

I agree that they are competitors but since there is no cope or rear wheel drive option for the others, they are not in my eyes because that's what I want.

Looks good in blue no doubt, need a flashy color on that car as the exterior styling is a bit bland for my taste. Don't like it nearly as much in silver for instance. Was hoping the new RS3 would push it a little more with bigger fender flares, but I'm sure it will look good in person.

I'm just not a fan of fwd based architecture or the styling. Especially the AMG one is a lot of $ for what it is IMO. C450 seemed like a lot more car for the same amount.

That said to be completely fair none of these cars are "bad" per se. We're firmly in the land of splitting hairs over nice options.

I drove the RS3 today just to satisfy myself that I had looked properly at the options. It was MUCH better than I expected based on reviews etc.

This car is awesome but there is so much hate for it out there. Every journo and reviewer seems to find the same faults (numb steering, understeer on the limit) but how many of the keyboard haters have actually had a drive?

Needs to have the magnetic suspension option and it is a wallowy mess in comfort but in dynamic this thing is brilliant.

Engine thrust and exhaust note are like a mini lambo. Point and squirt on windy roads with no issues.

With our local speed limits I could not get anywhere near the reported understeer issues. It just cornered on rails up to speeds where my licence was at risk.

Its significantly cheaper, has more colour options and you can get one without a long wait.

However, I think I will stick with the M2 because I want rear wheel drive and what I think will be superior trackability.

Not an easy or obvious choice, especially if you have no track plans.

Common trend I am seeing... Actual users are really liking the RS3 compared to media reviews which still like the car, but have some nitpicks.

Although the US variant is supposedly going to be close to 400 HP. Wonder if that will change minds...

I am assuming all those saying they drove the RS3 have driven the current euro hot hatch version not the sedan version that is supposedly coming to NA in 2017. I also wonder what other changes (besides the obvious body changes) would be in the new version.
