Grille shutters?

Was wondering if anyone could shed some light on this:

Having a look in detail of the various X1s being posted I noticed some cars (esp the UK ones, on both XLine and MSport) have what appears to be plastic black grille shutters behind the kidney grilles. X1s that I've seen in Aust don't have this, instead can see the diagonal bars and radiator through the grilles. The shutters make for a much neater appearance. So are they a market-specific feature, or an option, or come only on the diesel cars?

This might explain what I mean:

I noticed them today when I washed my car. I have a diesel, I was wondering where they are for? I thought maybe because it is "cold" and they open in the summer?

I've got them on my 20D: I hadn't seen them shut until I went and looked after seeing this thread!

AFAIK they are thermostatically controlled to shut-off airflow to the radiator when not needed, to speed warm-up and reduce drag.

Thanks guys, I have a feeling the Aust spec cars don't have this feature as on every car I've seen here, hot or cold, have never seen the shutters closed. Probably don't have it due to our hotter climate. Pity as it looks good. The silver bits of the radiator are distracting.

Just found another thread which explains it

Its called Air Vent Control. If the air isnt needed grills shut to improve aerodynamics.

Interesting - I knew about the system, but have not seen any INFO that it is incorporated in X1 - will obviously be incorporated in my upcoming X2

The ones who don't believe having system - have you really checked, you may have been driving in a manner that requires "additional" air to radiator? E.g. slowing down to enter parking.

Shutters should be possibel to see, wether open or closed.

Note: shutters NOT for cold areas, but to reduce drag.

Only countries that require the option 1CB "CO2 equipment" get them.
Thats mostly European countries.
The others are open.
Have mostly only seen them on Diesels aswell.

Its the same with the pedestrian protection bonnet/hood raisers. Only certain countries get them.

UK 20i owner and I have the shutters. Definitely not a Diesel-only feature.

Cool
Thats why I said mostly and not only

It may be that some countries only fit them to Diesels.
Hence the pictures ive seen of Diesels with and Petrol's without in some areas.

Here we dont get them at all

Again: this is a fuel economy "thing" - although, theoretically, it will shorten heat-up.

Toughest requirements within EU - which still includes the UK

Australia and South Africa is "out of bounds". Greece "barely" within

isn't it part of the "cold weather package"?
most of european countries do see snow for at least 2 months a year, so I believe it is standard in most eu countries, (I have it on my 20i, too),
whereas in US it probably is not installed for a Florida based car...

No
Canada gets lots of snow and doesnt get them

As I mentioned, to get them BMW in your country has to spec option 1CB "CO2 equipment"

I have the grills on my 18d sdrive. Now when temperature outside is around 5 celsius and lower, it is always closed, as I have seen. I can agree that it looks great when closed

Again: NOT for improved heat up. In theory it will allow less cold air around engine - in reality difference is "non-measurable"- whatever BMW claims.
