Both drove today, and came away with the following:

Both are heavy, cumbersome and somewhat numb, only the 7 is slightly
less numb, and slightly more agile.

The fit and finish on the S is hands down better, though I can't stand the steering column shifter, and the nav screen is overly large, and screws up the flow of the dash.

The Benz has more presence than the 7, but it offers almost zero steering feel.

The 7 is certainly not ugly, but it's by no means a head turner.

The a8/s8 is a viable contender but I'm not crazy about the Mac truck grille on Audi's.

Jag XJ is apparently awesome to drive but the styling is somewhat awkward.

Drove the Maserati QP and felt the All Wheel Drive car was underpowered.

Anyone else having a similar conundrum?

I can't find a big daily driver sedan that ticks all the boxes.

Panamera drives well, but I can't get over the back.

Lightbulb

That just about sums up ALL of my thoughts/impressions as well. By admission I have not driven either but this also seems to be the consensus from editors as well. I still say the G12 has NOT lived up to expectations. At least for me. BMW had 9yrs to unleash a "game changer". There were magnificent concepts floating around. Instead, they give us a "larger 4 Series" SMH...

I literally can't find an option that doesn't involve making sacrifices.

Panamera GTS is a blast to drive but it's 120k and the rear end has yet to grow on me.

Need to drive the s8 but don't find the styling to be all that appealing.

7 is just underwhelming on so many levels. I figured the driving experience would be far more rewarding than the S, but the difference was marginal.

You both have nailed it. I am in the same boat, and my lease on my 2013 750li comes due in April. I have had 4 7's in a row, each better than the last. I have always done the M sport package, and this last one with individual interior which is awesome. I have always loaded them up, and swap out the runcraps for regular all seasons for the summer, and snows for the winter. The ride and poise is amazingly different.
To your points, I agree, so disappointed with the new design, really underwhelming and blah. They really had an opportunity to knock it out of the park, especially with some of the design concepts. The interior came out nice, some of the goofy tech is cool, and finally a moon roof like the benz, but overall just ok.
As far as where to go, the audi s8 is a beast but going to be redesigned next year, the s550 is a bit stogey for me ( even with the sport package) , and the Maserati has old outdated tech, as well as too soft.
Believe it or not, looking at Range Rover Sport SVR, or maybe new MB E550 ?
At the end of the day, probably will wind up with a new 7Msport, get the black grill, tape the chrome strip in the back, 35% tint, and at least look a bit different than a large 3 series...
Btw, I do have an i8 which they did do right...

Funny you should mention the RR.

I drove a supercharged this morning and was very impressed. Had a deep throaty exhaust and plenty of getup and go. I imagine the SVR is that much more impressive.

The S Class is like driving your living room around.

If I didn't need AWD, I would consider an M6 Gran Coupe.

Thought about the e63, but the styling isn't all that exciting, and it's due for a total redesign next year.

The SVR is a real beast with a very cool interior. Only issue is I think I will get sick of it quickly as after a year it starts to rattle, squeak, and loosens up. In addition, the sport tires are bad in the winter ( I live in Westchester too ). The new E looks nice but definitely is small in the back.
Tesla P85D ? Screen would kill me with fingerprints...

Screen would make me crazy, and as much as I admire the technology and insane acceleration that the Tesla offers, I just don't consider them 'car guys' cars. The few people I know who own them seem to have little interest in cars, but a strong interest in gadgets.

Don't hate the x6 but don't love it. X5M is cool but you run the risk of looking like every other housewife who drives an x5 35i.

What about a cayenne GTS??

I'm grasping for straws here...

7 has one of the best User interface system which Mercedes cannot come close to it, basically out.
For the car in these classes, performance is only part of the consideration. If I need performance, I will never want a big sedan.
Everything count, ride, quietness, harmony, GUI, user friendly, ....
7 is one at this moment.

if you don't need awd.........try driving the Quattroporte GTS "V8".....its 500+hp is pretty fast and it turns more heads than all its competitors, just dont expect hi-tech gadgetry in it.

I used to drive a 7 series F02 for 5 years and it was a luxo barge....my Q-GTS feels a ton more sportier

Love the QP. Actually have a 14 Granturismo Sport, and the bark the car emits on startup, always gets me excited to drive it.

Would buy the v8 QP today if I didn't need the AWD.

I've had a ghibli as a loaner a few times and have not been impressed at all. I also think it waters down the brand.

I'll be using this car as a daily driver, and live in NY, where the winters can be rough.

You sir should try a new M5. Put some snow tires on you're good to go for 95 percent of the winter months (today's one of the five percent times).
Believe it or not, the M5 makes a daily driver.

Ummm; you DO know that BMW USA offers the Alpina B6 which is AWD right with similar power to the M6

Decent suggestion. Never been crazy about Alpina styling features, but it may be worth investigating.

Wonder how long it takes between ordering and taking delivery.

Get a Tesla 90D. Cheaper than a Panamera S, much better looking, drives really well, and performs like a M5 in pretty much all legal speeds.

I think it's a car guy's car, and has really nice gadgets as well. Would highly recommend as long as you have another gas car for certain road trips (e.g. can't wait for charging, or where charging is not available; I assume all people shopping in this segment do).

Agreed. I'm a tad biased (currently drive an F02 and have a G12 on order) but really don't like the front or rear-ends of the S-Class.

I think it's safe to say that all of them are underwhelming.....the S550, 7 series, A8 is old now.....XJ is old, too. Teslas are dime a dozen.

I think the interiors and tech on the S and 7 are great.....but the exteriors don't do it for me. The last S design was great.....hard to meet that bar again. The last 7 also was a bit underwhelming (and I had one....so not biased against).

Definitely a fan of the new RR....might pick one of those up once my M6 GC lease is up next December. White with black roof? Hot.

I think the new 5 is really going to be nice.....that's BMW's top model in my opinion. Don't base your thoughts on the new 5 based off your thoughts on the new 7. They do that mid-size better than anyone in my opinion.....easily better than the A6/E-class.

Drove a 2015 s550 coupe on Saturday.

Far more engaging than the sedan. By no means a sports car but an excellent GT.

Dealer offered 15k off sticker to shift it.
