Any other Cayman/boxster folks considering the M2?

So I am on my second 981, 2016 Cayman S. I still love the car and enjoy every drive, but this spring will be 3 years with essentially the same car, which is a long time for me (I gots the car switchitis disease).

I have been looking at what will be its replacement and the M2 looks pretty compelling. I am a manual guy so that makes the playing field somewhat more narrow.

I had a C7 for 3 weeks and did not like it, so that is out.
the gt350 is interesting but looks a little too big for my liking, my c7 experience made me appreciate how much I like a compact car
really I don't see much else out there that compels me?

I like NA powerplants so that is something about the m2, I know I won't like as much, but I find it beautiful and aggressive looking, it is small and compact, offers a manual, and promises great handling and ride characteristics...I can't think of anything else out there that is as quite on point as the next move from a 981 (assuming a more or less lateral move is what one is contemplating)

any other cayman/boxster drivers considering the M2?

Funny, I am in the opposite situation.
I am first on the list at my dealer for the M2 and should receive it late April. This will be my 5th BMW and I am debating going for a slightly used 981 CS instead if I find one with the right options...

I like the third pedal as well so the choice is limited. I test drove the M4 like it but felt a bit too big...
M2 and 981CS are definitely the 2 finalists in my book.

I`m just a step further already

I`ve traded in my 2014 Cayman GTS, and bought a M2 ETA end of April 2016.

I`ve driven the cayman GTS for 16 months, and as much as did like the sound, the in- and exterior, the awesome PCCB, I had some complaints too; I hated the sportseats +, I just coudn`t find an adequate seating position, witch resulted in a very cramped driving way.
I also disliked the way it steered, the caster gave it a strange kind of resistance in the steering feel, believe me, I tried to get used to it, but I could not, I could not become friends with this for me tiresome and annoying kind of steering. So I turned it in.

After owing an E46 M3, E92 M3, E82 1M, a quick sidestep to Porsche, I`m coming back to BMW`s F87 M2.

I guess I`m more of a Bimmer guy after all..............

Exactly why I have been encouraging waffling BIMMER owners to " go ugly early ".

Have an itch for a mustang , camaro, or some plebeian Cayman that is below a GT4... Heck go buy it quick and see how you like it ... But do
It before you step out of the M2 line ... You just might find yourself making a U turn ..

Me too. The 235 was my 5th straight BMW and was really disappointing. So I didn't end up waiting for the M2 and got my 981 CS this past June. It's been a great car so far - but I will be keeping my eye on the M2 as well.

If I never had a 981 before I would also pick it over the M2...I went from a Z4 coupe to a 981 and I was happy with the move, but now having had a 981 for almost 3 years I am lookin to make a move and the M2 looks like it might be it.

I would have considered a Porsche Cayman, but the car is a deal-breaker since it is only 2 seats.

Cars can be compared from a performance perspective, but can't be compared from a practicality perspective.

I have been with my cayman 2.7 for 8 years now (2008). Love the handling and the overal responsivenes. A little bit down on the power side with only 245hp, but great in a way that you could use the whole powerband on street anywhere. So engaging. Than there is the sweet howling sound (PSE and PSAM with 6 speed manual) Well the 2 seats are the main reason I am letting it go to my father. I want my kids to experience "fun" on weekends too.

I was thinking about 911, but than I would like to go back to my roots where my first sport car was the "shoe" Z3M coupe - estoril blau in 2002.

Preordered M2 LBB with DCT. My only concern is the electric steering in modern cars, got used to reading my car through fingers as well. 10% is down. Can't wait

Well the cars are in the same league as sport vehicle and you wouldnt belive the practicality of Cayman with 2 booths.

It is a great grocerie getter. After some time you become expert in packing Did whole Italy roadtrip consisting of 2 weeks vacation with my wife with it.

I'm trying to narrow it down as well (M2 vs. Cayman GTS, even considering a GT4). I want to grab a Cayman before they are switched to the 4-pot turbo. Owned my M135i for two years now so moving to the Cayman would be a completely different experience, the M2 not so much.

I will prabably get hanged here for that, but if you are not having an issue with 2 seater Cayman is experience to have. Forget about immediate power like in M135i you have to work hard for that, than you get rewarded it is true drivers car.

When I think about it, the porsche is also extremely refined and behaving on the street. Where I live we have a lot of potholes and the car is more comfy than my daily beater 2015 320d kombi.

For me M2? - I want to be hooligan again, I dont care anymore if it is going to break my teeth

The Cayman GTS was indeed very refined, although only 340 HP and 380Nm of torque I had never the idea it lacked power, great PDK however it makes you a little bit lazy and also slightly disconnected feel from the car (the main reason I ordered a 6MT M2, having owned the 6MT 1M, the gearbox was just great)

Of course the car is much lighter compared to an M2, but both are great cars.

The very main reason for me to trade it in;

1 The poor seating position du to lack of upper leg support, very cramped driving

2 The steering feel, to much resistance, to much self centering, the steering needs constant attention, constant input of force while cornering, it felt like a front wheel drive car, a kind of torque steer to me. I know this is hard to believe to die hard Porsche fans, but this was the way I felt it, I`ve been told it`s steeringfeel is the reason of the used caster, with is higher than in any M-BMW, well I couldn`t get used to it, the rest is history.

If I only had a wife, I agree. But I need to travel with my son too, so the Cayman is out.

The 981CS is a much more enjoyable vehicle for me. What do I like more: visibility, compact size, nimbleness, throttle response is much more immediate and electric (vette's torque management system creates the slightest of lags), to me the flat 6 sound is better than the vette's v8 even with performance exhaust (I thought the vette sounded good, but just not distinctive like the flat 6, more like a truck than the race car sound that the CS provides), better shift action, the mid engine handling, turn in, rotational feel, the looks (subjective), the quality and feel of the interior. About the only thing the vette had over the CS was low rpm torque and a better ride (more supple and soaked up bumps better).

My c7 was a base manual with Zf1 package and performance exhaust, obviously a z51 would handle much better, but for me it wasn't the just the handling that made the car less enjoyable.

Damn, nothing quite looks as nasty looking as the C7 though. So aggressive.

Yah it is a fun car in that sense, rockstar looks (everyone looks at the car) and sound, it definitely has presence.

It's a nice problem to have; I've never owned a Porsche before so I think it's time to check that box. Thanks for the feedback.

Ditto. There's a huge leap in size or weight in P card if you want 4 real seats. Panamera and Macan.

I have to agree - we just moved my girlfriend's entire closet in my 981 - no joke - all clothes, jeans, shoes, boots...I was shocked, but it all fit.

This is a valid concern to have, in terms of getting a flat 6 before they're adios - I was at my dealer yesterday and my SA was telling me they're expecting to see the 981.2 before the end of the summer, in terms of being able to sell them.

Porsche USA is having all the dealers and sales guys out to Atlanta sometime in March to test drive the facelifted cars...the assumption is that they will be headed this way en masse soon thereafter.
