2013 Boxster S vs a short term 328i to wait for the M2?

So my 2009 6MT 135i was totalled for an other party's fault accident. I bought the car used 5 years ago for some $43k CAD and I got a $27k CAD cheque back from insurance for it. Really low cost of ownership for the past 5 years. I am doing public transit in near freezing temperatures. I need a new car now and I need one bad.

Main gripe I had for the 135i is that it actually wasn't that good on the track with the small wheel well and undersized rotors. It's also not that great whenever the car goes off smooth pavements for hiking and skiing. It was tho great on the street. Just enough space for day to day use (was able to fit a bike at the back with seats folded), but still somewhat fun to drive.

My initial plan was to take-over a lease on a Blue on Red 2013 328i for around $550 CAD a month, no down no nothing. It's going to be a big downgrade in most sense, especially when it's an 8AT. But the hope is that this is merely a tie over until the M2, or I go full practical and get the G01 X3.

Then I came across this moderately optioned 2013 Porsche Boxster S PDK for $65k CAD. It's red on black with some reasonable options so it's not bare inside. PASM, Navigation, Sports Chrono, Partial Leather. I'd say 80% of the way a GTS would've been optioned. My perfect ideal Porsche would be a Cayman GTS with 6MT. For a 3 years used Porsche, and for $65k CAD, not sure if this Boxster is close enough. Biggest problem with a Boxster is that it's hugely unpractical. Let alone being bad off pavement. It's going to become impossible. Then I might need to get a winter beater.

So a huge downgrade going down to a 328i for 20 months. Or life's too short and I shouldn't pass up this one chance I got to get into a P car?

Advice much appreciate. Thanks!

I'm in the same boat (sort of). Have a deposit down on a m2 while a drive around in my DD (Ford Edge) but recently the caymans/boxsters have caught my attention.
I guess the biggest difference would be the lack of a back seat. If that's ok, I would do the boxster over 328 no question...unless your certain about wanting an m2...

Lack of a back seat isn't as bad as lack of a decent trunk. And then both snow and unpaved road would be a no go for it. So it's really a 60k+ car + another beater... That sounds like a lot of money spent on cars...

The Boxter will be fine in snow with a good set of snow tires. I daily drove an M3 through many a snow storm and had no issues with my snow tires on (not winter tires, snow tires).

That said, it doesn't seem to fit your actual needs for a car at all. My vote is keep looking and broaden what you are looking at.

Rutted dirt roads one day and track the next? That would be a Subaru STI.

Ideal setup would be a Cayman S/GTS with an X3. But of course that's triple if not quadruple the price of a STi...

Because M2.. The M2 likely will be the car that does all of the above.

The Boxster is tempting sorta.. But not really as you said your dream car would be 6MT.. So ditch that PDK.

Until then.. Check out perhaps a used E46 325 or 330. Phenomenal little car for not much money and you can often find low mileage examples for short money. They Make a great commuter car and low on maintenance.

Then all you have to do is actually part with the little e46 daily driver when you get the M2... Or.. Do you?

Not gonna flip cars, gonna get killed on taxes (12% each time u buy, new or used). I'm considering getting a winter/off-pavement vehicle for now, thinking 07-09 Acura RDX... until I spot a nicely optioned and reasonably priced Porsche Cayman instead. GTS MSRP isn't a lot higher, but used prices is insane compared to the 981S. I'd think a reasonably optioned, used 981S can be found for new M2 money, especially if there's going to be a shortage of the M2 through-out 2016.

That said, nice M2 Artemis! Maybe I'll change my mind if I ever get more back to back test drives once the M2 does come out proper.
