Requests for DIYs

Just thought it would be nice to make a request thread for those things we would like to see DIYs on.

For example, I don't recall seeing a DIY on:

Fuel filter replacement.
Coil Pack / Spark Plug replacement.

Please add more as you think of them....

Intake DIY.
Something like MR5 in the e9x post.
M5 F10 intakes are very expensive for the moment.

Its pretty easy. I have attached a little picture of what you need to remove to remove the DME's.

Basically remove the plastic Engine cover (just pull up it snaps off). Then remove those items in the picture I have the arrows to. The ECU assembly locks in similar to how the engine plastic cover is. You just pull it off the rubber grommet holes. Do the same for the other side.

Make sure you zip-tie those coolant lines up so it doesn't leak everywhere.

I see a lot of people including myself interested in upgrading/ replacing interior trim pieces just to change things up. If somebody knows where a DIY guide of removing and installing those interior trim pieces that would be very helpful. Thanks!

Thanks for the detailed pic. Do you disconnect the battery before disconnecting the ECU harness?

Yes -- it's good practice to disconnect the battery for any work with electrical component impact.

It is best practice to disconnect the battery. However, I did not and have not had any issues disconnecting them with the battery connected (I have done it multiple times as well).

Here is a little guide I just whipped up as I just recently installed a JB4 +BCM and Bluetooth connect kit on my M6. It took me about an hour to do it as I have done it about 3 times now. Let me know if you have any questions about it.

The wire for the obd can be tucked under the plastic covers where I have the line drawn.

UPDATE: Picture with the intake off.

The trim pieces are actually pretty easy to remove. Most all of them only push on. Get a credit card or plastic prop tool and stick it between the leather and trim piece. Once you have a little leverage pull against them and they will pop out. After they pop out just disconnect any plugs if the trim has any electronics on them.

Great - thanks for the info! I'm probably going to tackle this soon...seems pretty straight forward.

On the coolant loss, if careful will a lot drain out (as opposed to not being careful and losing more). How much needs to be topped off (generally) if done carefully?

Thanks again!

On this latest install on the M6, I actually had someone hold the turbo cooler pulled to the left while I reached down and install the connectors instead of pulling off the coolant hoses on the right side. I had minimal loss of coolant from the small hose on the top of the cooler. If you remove both coolant hoses on the right side you will lose about a gallon. I would recommend having someone hold the turbo-cooler with the coolant lines still connected while you connect the plugs for minimal if any loss of coolant. I didn't have to put in any extra coolant doing this method.

Thanks for the write up! Actually did the JB4 today at my office warehouse. Any chance you want to help me out with the BCM install haha!

Man, again MUCH APPRECIATED! Since you mentioned it, could you elaborate on the turbo cooler and where exactly to hold? I apologize for the questions but I just want to be sure I have someone hold the right thing when doing this (yes, that's what she said - haha).

Thanks!

Basically the left question mark is the heat exchanger that you need to hold to the left after you loosen the ring clamps. It should give you enough room to reach down and remove the connectors without having to remove the 2 coolant hoses connected to it from the right side. It was my third time so I knew what I was looking/feeling for.

LOL...yeah, I knew those were the exchangers but for some reason my brain wasn't comprehending what you were saying. I guess I just assumed they were pretty solidly mounted and didn't have any 'give. Thanks for clearing it up...and giving me a 'duh' moment.
