X1 1.8d Sport S drive

Picked up the above as a loan car from my local dealer this evening I will try and get some pictures when it is light. Never thought I would be driving a front wheel drive BMW! Seems nicely put together on first inspection.

Interesting. 18d sDrive was only available with base SE trim initially. BMW UK website now says it's available with all trims BUT Sport. So I guess it's available with all trims.

Is yours manual or auto? I have not read any comments on the manual version yet.

I could be wrong, but assumed it is a sport as it has the sports seats and Mocha leather, which isn't available on the SE AFAIK. Not had the opportunity to give it a good once over yet as Mrs W has it at the moment.

It has a manual box which shifts OK, but the pedals seem very close together, I assume that is some of the MINIness it has inherited.

Easiest way to figure out which trim we're talking about is to look at the side skirt exterior trims. If it's black plastic, it's SE. If it's the same colour as the body, it's Sport. If silver, xLine. All body-coloured, obviously M Sport. It's pretty much the same for all BMW X models.

Seat options vary a lot from one market to another. And it's ridiculously and unnecessarily complicated. UK M Sport comes with cloth/alcantara sport seats (+£800 for leather upgrade). xLine comes with standard leather (+£395 for sport seats upgrade). Sport comes with sport cloth seats (+£1,150 leather). SE gets standard cloth (+£1,150 and +£395 sport seats). Some markets can't get the sport seats as an individual option (or at all) with xLine or SE.

It's a complete mess and I can't for the life of me understand why. I can see the logic behind changing availability of certain options for certain markets (cold weather pack for cold countries, etc.). But I don't understand why UK xLine customers can have sport seats as an option, but US customers can't. Or M Sport steering wheel availability with xLine/Sport (you can get it in Ireland, but not in the UK)... Makes no sense at all.

It should have a painted trim instead of the standard matt black plastic.

Dirty or not, she's beautiful! The dirt is a mite ironic given your username is "washy".

Except BMW seems to have installed the steering wheel on the wrong side!
(kidding of course )

Thanks for posting the pics!

Nice one. Looks like it has some fancy options too. LED headlights are not standard on Sport. I also had no idea 18d had a single tailpipe. It somehow makes the rear end look taller and more SUV-like IMO.

It does have a few toys on it. As well as the LED lights it has mocha leather, driver assistance, heated seats and sliding rear seats.

I must say it has impressed me quite a lot and am looking forward to ordering ours although we will be going 2.0d and auto.

Washy, did you find the 18d underpowered or adequate for day to day driving?

I am in Australia and my 18d will be ready for pick up this week

The 18d was not bad at all and we could easily live with on a day to day basis. The only thing that I was a bit disappointed with was the fuel consumption as it only seems to average about 47 mpg, which is nowhere close to the combined figure quoted here in the UK.

We spend a fair bit of time in Aus and I love the fact that the brochure for the X1 uses Sydney Harbour Bridge and Luna Park on the cover...

What kind of roads/traffic did you drive on? 47mpg = 6.0L/100km. I would be very happy with that if I get that as I do short distance (<5km) most of the time. I guess fuel economy also improves after the car is run in.

Fairly mixed including a daily commute is 25 miles each way and a good chunk of urban stuff thrown in too. The car had around 500 miles on.

One of my work colleagues has a 120d and is getting 50mpg so figured I would see that sort of return on the X1

Just a quick update as we be keeping the car until our own is ready. Fuel consumption is consistently around 50 mpg, which I am impressed with. While the car is no rocket ship it is quite punchy and have no complaints with the performance of the car at all. The only slight irritation is that the wind and tyre noise is a bit more than I would expect, but saying that is still better than the MINI we had.
In terms of day to day use it has fitted in to family life well and does all that is asked of it. Several trips to the recycling depot and even easily got our Christmas tree in earlier today.
All in all I am very taken with the X1 and looking forward to ours arriving.

Sad day today as the X1 got a nail in a rear tyre and as the dealer couldn't get a replacement we have now got a 116d to use until our car arrives. It is true what they say about not missing what you have until it is gone....

Now when you have driven both, what can you say about difference in comfort and seats in X1 and 1 series? thanks

Was that a runflat or non runflat punctured tyre on x1?

The puncture was in a non run flat tyre.

I like the seats in the X1 they are a little smaller than the 1 series, but are both supportive and comfortable.

Our X1 is replacing a current generation MINI and the seats are similar to that, if I am honest I preferred the MINI seat to my own M235i.
