Car shuts off while driving...
Hi guys, looking for feedback. I have a 2011 335xi coupe (auto).
Monday evening....I turned on my car and it would shut off when I shifted from Park "P" to Drive "D". After this happened about 2 to 3 times, it worked fine. I drove about 20 miles. No problem. Fast forward to Tuesday afternoon....my car would cut off while driving. I would simply be driving and it would cut off as in go completely "limp". My speeds ranged from 10-40 MPH. This happened about 5/6 times (all on local roads) then stopped. I drove about 5 miles. No problem. The steering wheel also tightens when the "shut off" occurrs; brakes still work. Any ideas of what this could be? Seems dangerous as the "shut off" can happen at any time so have not driven it. Will look to take to dealer or indy shop but any feedback would be appreciated it. |

Check your battery. Mine did that when the battery was below 30% . My lights would dim and shut off too. Does your traction control and brake light symbol come on?

First, get the codes read by somebody with proprietary BMW scanning capabilities. That'll point you in the right direction. It doesn't sound to me like limp mode with the power steering shut-off.

Could be the cable running to the fusebox but I dont think they had these problems for the newer ones.
Check battery for sure.

Your most likely on the original battery. And its about that time for a nee one. So i would def look into that first.
Now when you say the car cuts out. Does the engine actually stall and shut off? Or it goes into limp mode and you lose power steering? I know my car has the regular non active steering. So the only way for me to lose power steering is the engine actually shutting off therefore stopping the power steering pump from pumping. Maybe you have active steering and the fault is shutting it down for safety. |
