996T or wait for M2...

Found a nice 2004 996T with 20k miles for ~ $46.0. With $8.0 reserve for possible clutch and other routine maintenance issues I am at $54k. If I purchased, I would plan to keep it for 5 years.

Since this is close to the (potential) purchase price of an M2, would you wait or go for the 996T?

*Plan for some track use and need limited back seat space.

I'd get the 996T and throw in a pioneer apple carplay headunit.

You really think the M2 is going to keep up with a 996 Turbo on the track?

No.

Make sure you have plenty of funds in reserve for maintenance. A 911 turbo (any year) is expensive to maintain, more so if you're keeping it for 5 years and pulling track duty. God forbid you'd need to replace a turbo.

Kinda where I was going, but I thought maybe the poster had some information that I wasn't privy to. My 996 GT3 buddies average $500-$600 per track day for brakes & tires. Never mind repairs.

$600 per day sounds cheap to me for a GT3. My E36M3 runs in that ballpark, and my tires cost half as much.

415 hp, 3388 curb weight....both of those figures will almost definitely trump the M2. The 996T is AWD which isn't a bad thing. Porsche's AWD system kicks ass; the 991 4S won MT best driver's car two years ago.

Dang, and I was thinking about going that direction. I don't spend $600 a day on my corvette including track fees, tires, brakes and fluids.

I'd rather a spanking new M2 than a 11 year old Porsche any day of the week.

I've always thought that you need to be rich to buy a high-end sportscar.
And you need to be even richer to buy an out-of-warranty high end sportscar

The words "Sports Car" and "Affordable" don't belong in the same sentence.

Although I've heard that 996 Turbos are quite robust, and with proper maintenance can last for hundreds of thousands of miles, I would personally still rather go with an NA 911. I have been basically considering the same options - M2, versus the most recent 911 I could afford... preferably in the 991 range though.

In those days Toyota MR2 and today Toyota GT86? Or yet or many years Mazda MX-5 Roadster - despite not being Coupé?

Depends how you define "sports car".

Parts are going to be big money. Might be better get an 06/07 c2 S or C4S as the 997 progressed a lot from the 996 in terms of performance and particularly on the interior fit and finish.

If you have the $$ just get what you like. What is bad is the maintenance on older cars. Rubber ages and after 10 years all the bushings, shocks and seals are not up to spec. If you want a older car to drive like new it will cost $$ and prepare to spend more.

I had a X50 996 turbo and I wasn't a big fan. It wheel hopped like crazy and my old lancer evolution MR was actually a better handling car. At 54k budget I'd rather sport a full warranted M2, Focus RS, audi RS3, new z4/supra or maybe Fords GT350R coming to Detroit.

Wow! I figured $500 a day to track would cover it - guess a few less weekends at the track. I would like a 997T, but it's more than I care to spend.

Yep, the maintenance on a ten year old exotic is a concern. I planned to budget $2800 year but one bad gasket could mean big trouble which does concern me.

And the 350 is on my short list; however this turbo just popped up last week and got me excited. Trying it out next week.

M2 will be too good to pass it. Also on track will be faster. Taking into account the fresh and aggressive look, I see no points for that Turbo! Good luck with either purchase!

Not for everyone, but one can also look into an early model F car. Slower, but a whole different driving and ownership experience.

There are several threads on Rennlist about GT3 and Cup operating costs. The lowest estimate I've seen is $900 per HOUR. They range up to five times that for cars in serious competition duty. If you are content to go slow, you can save a lot. I'll burn through tires and brakes twice as fast turning 1:39 at Road Atlanta than I do at 1:45.
