Buckle-up, Buttercup. (M3 GTR video)

Nurburgring, from the BMWUSA.com site. Speakers down, the noise can be unbearable. The driver will do a couple of laps in the short circuit first, then he'll blast-off into the rest of Nurburgring.

Damn.

That was a seriously cool video, a seriously fast drive around that track, and a seriously LOUD car. Driver was pretty serious too, until the end Must have had a good time I guess.

And you know what?

You don't see it but he is being chased/slipstreamed by another racer(think it was a 996 BIturbo or something like that)

I believe it was a qualifying session and Hänschen took pole on that round. Hence the joy. (He probably was told of his position via radio). I think he also won the race, but only because the long-time leading Porsche that performed quite a bit better had to retire shortly before the end. At least that´s what I remember, could be wrong,

Is it just me or did that crack on the windshield bother everyone else? Is it just me or did his tail almost kicked out during one of the last few turns before that straight away. Is it just me or is that straight away crazy. And is it just me that loves the way they setup the gear, rpm never seemed to drop one bit on upshifts. It sounded as if he's downshifting.

How exactly does that gear work? I can't imagie the driver is pressing a clutch because that seems humanly impossible given the speed with which he is changing.

I watched for and didn't really see his left leg moving on a clutch. I am guessing that there isn't one? SMG maybe? Although its strange because the gear placement looks to be a standard manual setup.

Racing clutch that has minimal travel distance? I would think unless its Ferrari F1 style, you would want to be driving a regular manual on those type of races. Or maybe it's like one of those dragster type where the clutch is on the shifter. Although quick, you can still hear the liftoff of gas, so I think it's just a standard manual.

Just reviewed the clip, ya you can totally see his left feet lifting.

Yeah I occasionally saw his left leg move but just barely. And other times just not at all even though he changes gears quite often. Oh well, he is clearly 7 orders of magnitude a better driver than I am so what do I know

It looks like it moves occasionally too, but it it is really unclear whether it's the left or the right leg. However, when he is going sooo fast and when he downshifts in rapid succession, I don't see it move. I find it almost impossible to believe that he can make the changes that fast if he had to press a clutch.

Racing style clutch. Most race cars use a similar setup. NASCAR, IRL, etc...The only thing the clutch is used to for is to launch the car from a stop. Then, they bang every shift thereafter.

The transmission is a conventional H-pattern 'box, but it's straight-cut with triple-disc carbon-fibre clutch. 3rd to 4th and 5th to 6th can be shifted without clutch at above 8000rpm (redline is 8500 for the PTG spec and 9000 for the Schnizter spec). BMW Motorsport would have liked a sequential gearbox but huge F1 budget meant not enough money for the endurance/touring developments

The M3 GTR has a paddle shifter.

Not sure if its SMG or SMG2 or even newer.

The M3's raced in the 2003 GT class world challenge.

Bill Auberlen, Hans Stuck (who we just saw owning Nurb Ring), Justin Marks, and Boris Said had m3's fitted with paddle shifters.

I wish GT class was more popular then nascar, I love nascar and all but GT is just way too cool to watch.

The paddle shifter is recognizable by the sequencing through the gears on the down shift. Manual's go stright through (of course).

That was the quickest run I've ever seen on the Nurburgring.

Seen alot of footage of laps there.
