You can probably guess... build quality is better on the bmw. and the Z/28 is faster around a road course. That car, despite its weight, is a track monster

No comparison. The Z/28 is faster around the track than both the 911 Turbo S and GT-R. That said, it's still a Camaro...

Do people really cross shop these two?
Besides price, they're aimed at different customers.

MotorTrend did a comparison between the Z/28 and the GTR...and the Z/28 won (at least the track portion), though not by much. So short of seeing an actual comparison between the M4 and Z/28, I'd place my bet on the Z/28 being faster around a track.

This.

I just cant see someone wanting an M4/M3 and deciding to cross shop the Camaro. I love the looks of the Camaro and its hands down better than all previous models but still very different from an M car.

Last time I checked, Z/28's were well within the M3/M4's territory in terms of price. Quality, comfort, fit/finish are another story....

Agreed on the price...it's the quality, comfort, fit and finish is where I see the major differences.

Wow! Great article. It really points out how you need to do your research before spending a dime on a car.

Yes they do cross shop them, because that's exactly what I did. I wanted a fun car for weekends and date nights that was also very capable on the track. I have always been an F body guy, have owned 4 camaros and trans ams but last few years I really fell in love with M cars.

I looked for a camaro z28 first but they are very scarce, I never even got to sit in one, let alone drive one. One dealer offered me one they had coming in for $25k over sticker, so $101k. You can guess what I told him. At that point I looked closer at the M4.

One thing that bothered me about the z28 is it still weighs 3800+ lbs. I figured the M4 is lighter and WAY more comfortable around town, not to mention it looks much prettier than the z28 which is friggin ugly.

I'd still love to try the z28 on the track though someday. I do doubt that it is really faster for most drivers than a GTR would be.

Damn 305s in the front!! I was just talking price range for the comparison. The Camaro's interior is obviously subpar to BMW's although exterior wise I feel they both have their own style in their own good ways.

On a BMW forum but not in the real world.

My local Chevy dealer has a Z28 in the showroom for MSRP.

o come on.. car should be more than just performance figures.. i wont look twice at camero on the road.. even being a z28.. plus if you really wanted perf per dollar figure, you would buy c7 anyway (cheaper and faster than z28).

I'd compare the Camaro a lot closer to the M4 than the Corvette. The complaint in the Corvette vs. M4 threads is always - "no back seat". Here's you back seat...

Although, the soon-to-arrive next gen Camaro will be a closer comparison to the M4. Better chassis, better interior, lighter, etc.

The current Z/28 is spectacular though.
