Electrical System Malfunction on 2004 530i

Hello all. Today I was driving on the way to work in normal stop and go traffic. All of the sudden my idrive flashed the error message, "Electrical System Malfunction" and said continued driving not possible. Almost as soon as the message appeared, it quickly disappeared. I pulled over and checked control messages, it was not there. A few months ago a teenager rear ended me, could that possibly have something to do with it since the battery is in the back? I'm at a loss here and would love to hear if any of you experienced this and if fixed, how you remedied it. Thank you in advance.
