Just ordered a New DSLR! ;)

Just placed my order online for a new Nikon D80 body. I'm upgrading from the D70 so I've already got a bunch of lenes that will work with it. I can't wait! Should be a lot of fun with 4 more megapixles (10.2MP). Only paid $803.99 with shipping. Assuming it ships tomorrow I should get it on Tuesday. The only bad news is that the 4GB Compact Flash Extreme III card I just ordered isn't going to work with the D80 because it takes SD cards instead of the CF format.

You'll love it. I recently got one myself. My first introduction into SLRs... so I've got a lot to learn.

Sorry to say but 4 MP won't do much (anything) for your photo quality unless you plan on making gigantic posters with all you photos.

+1

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond80/page24.asp suggests that you would need to print larger than 8x11 to see any differences between 6mp and 8mp.

But, it does provide more latitude for creative cropping.

Who says I don't plan to? And what do you mean "Sorry to say but 4 MP won't do much (anything) for your photo quality unless you plan on making gigantic posters with all you photos.?" Why would I have to print big posters with all my photos? Every last one of them? That would get gigantically expensive.

Yeah and I'm not just upgrading for the additional 4MP either. The D80 has a bigger screen, better constructed body, and certain other features like an automatic leveling gauge.

Regardless, what kind of DSLR are you using Diesel?

Because anything over 6MP won't do anything for 90% of the photo printing you will be doing. Unless you are doing crazy crops like Gripster said the extra MP will just end up taking up more valuebale space in your memory and hard drive. More MP only really comes in handy for huge prints (poster).

Funny you mention Upgrading because the d80 replaced the d70 so really an upgrade would be more along the lines of the d200, and from what I have read the d70 was consructed with much stronger plastic then the d80. It's your money but it would have been better spent on a new lens as the body will do nothing for your photos it will only make taking the pics a bit more convenient.

I have been shooting with the d50 for a while now and I see no reason to upgrade at this point. I could have a d200 tomorrow if I wanted but I would rather keep that money in my pocket for now, you see bodies and lenses will be replaced every 1-2 years and you could spend a fortune trying to keep up with the companies latest and greatest but none of that will matter for producing wonderful photography. A photographer should be measured their experience not their equipment. It's funny people always ask me what I use but it really does not matter, 99% of photography is in your head.

Here is a link to Bruce Percy's portfolio http://www.thelightandtheland.com/pa...g/eigg_02.html possibly some of the best photography in the world. He has some interesting things to say about technical gear and how it does not play into his images. Remember the word “image” comes from “imagination” and has nothing to do with noise levels and lens sharpness.

Thanks for your advice but I've already made up my mind. I have a list of reasons to upgrade and it's as simple as that. I was looking at the D200 but many of the pros have been saying that considering the fact the D80 is $500 less, the D80 is a hands down better choice for the money.

Damn, if that's the case then it's beyond me why Canon and Nikon make these DSLR camera's that cost thousands of dollars. And if I and the rest of the world were to believe the above then Kodak would have dominated the market with the $15 disposable camera a long time ago. If equipment doesn't matter why aren't we all walking around with a bunch of disposable cameras? Or better yet, a $10 film camera? Sorry, what you're saying might make some sense to all and a lot of sense to those that have a annual income of $200, but in the big picture it doesn't fly.

A lense is more importaint than a new body, I have had my 300D since it was released, without an issue. But the D80 is great have fun with it mate.

I know. I just purchased three new lenses in fact. I was going to buy the Nikkor 18-200 VR lens which is $750 instead of the D80 body but I REALLY want that 2.5" hi-res screen on the D80. Maybe it's just me but I find it extremely difficult to determine whether the picture's colors are accurate by looking at that little screen. The bigger and higher resolution screen found on the D80 suits me much better as I can tell what settings I need to change while on location instead of needing to load it on my computer.

Congrats on your new D80. I'm not to familiar with Nikons because I'm a Canon guy. But I do know that a D70 paired with quality glass would yield pics that would look absolutely amazing when composed and processed correctly.

I currently own a Canon Rebel XT and since the release of the new XTi I had the urge to "upgrade". Other than the 2 more MP's, 2.5" lcd screen and some kind of "sonic vibrating" dust remover for the sensor the two cameras were identical. So in the mean time I'll be upgrading my glass instead and hope to one day get a 30D or better yet a 1d Mark II!

Cheers! and Congrats!

ah ive been looking at getting this camera and the lens that you would have got if you didnt get the d80, itll be a big price for an amateur like me, and i probably wont be able to make full use of them for some time, but i want the room to grow into it

and you and diesel should quit bickering and share your passion, ive noticed that people bicker like that usually when there very passionate about what they are talking about
