So is this average?

Hey Guys- so since im pretty new to the whole university thing (ive been going to a community college), i was curious if this was an average/fair price for college

Hofstra is $16,000 per semester. It includes- classes, dorm, meal plan. This is a private university also.

Is that about right?

Yeah, that sounds about right for a private out-of-state university. About 30K a year.

uhhh... my sister's tuition is somewhere in the 40k's a year... with like a 5k scholarship... if ur talking about privates in general. im pretty sure its below average depending on how much financial aid and scholarships are handed to the students.

I dunno, In some ways it's a parents job to provide for their kids. I bet your parents are happy for you, Being accepted to a private school and going to get a good education. If you still feel bad though, you could always work part time to help pay for your school. Besides that, the best thing you can do, is do your best in school to make sure your parents, and you are getting the most out of your money.

The ~$30k-35k a year sounds about right for a private school.

Its amazing how fast tuition has gone up. In the 10 years since I finished college, my school's annual tuition and fees has gone up over 50%! At the rate things are going, the average undergrad student will have almost as much student loan debt I accumulated from undergrad and grad school! This is a very scary situation considering the way the economy and jobs are going.

Be very happy that your parents are picking up the bill.

My sister's in LSE, London School of Economics. Its something like that. Especially considering the conversion, it gets very pricey! London is one of the most expensive cities.

I think 16k is average, or maybe below average for a private university, esp. considering its in NY...

I studied biochemistry at McGill University in Montreal, Canada in the early 90's. Tuition was $950 per semester!

Then, I attended dental school at the same institution in the late 90's. Tuition was $4,000 a year!

Tuition for American colleges are ridiculous, IMHO.

My wife, who went to dental school at Columbia University, NY paid close to $40,000 a year in tuition.

$1700/semester for csulb. A good reason why I moved from NY. Community College alone was $1500/semester in NY!!! YIPE!

But I think that's about normal ($16000/semester for private school). My cuz goes to St. Johns (another private school in Queens, NY) and she is paying near 20k/semester.....insane

Maybe you wouldn't feel so guilty if you weren't driving an E90?

Not trying to burst your bubble...It's ok that parents pick up the tab but when they have to withdraw from savings not so good unless that is what the money was for. Kids can live with some debt and even get scholarships to cover costs. Parents have to have money to retire on unless the kids are going to pay for nursing homes at about $6k+ a month. That is just regular Medicare patients. With rising cost of college many parents will not be able to afford to cover all the costs without hurting themselves financially.

Will a degree from a private college make a difference in that field? Just asking a question so don't get all bent out of shape You have so many sports teams in Cali as it is. Maybe move somewhere else in Cali and still get in-state tuition rates versus out of state.

I went to NYIT (2 miles from Hofstra) and the semester is around 18,000 now. So it's about the same.

WELL.. its not so much the degree coming from a private school vs public, its just that NYC will have many many more opportunities for internships when it comes to public relations.
