You hit it right on the money! There is no getting around that no matter how much BMW spends on carefully placed shots and positive PR, the design isn't very good to me and a lot of other people. It can (and probably will) be great to drive but I'm not spending a lot of money on an ugly car.

It's also not the usual hemming and hawing over a weird LCI or the "curvy" F80/F82 or a pointless Coupe-UV and then buying it later, but actual genuine dislike for these oversized grilles that are making people legitimately stick with their current car or go to another brand!

How about they give us explanation as to why they're getting rid of the Hofmeister Kink?
According to Dukec...

"The Hoffmeister [the forward swoop or 'kink' at the base of the window on the rearmost pillar of BMWs], for example — until the G20 every 3 Series had almost the same window graphic. That meant that when you saw prototypes — when you saw a new BMW, it could be the previous model if you just looked at the top of the car. This was something I never understood.

In all these discussions about our icons, people say, 'But you can't change the Hoffmeister, you can't change the kidneys.' But who says so? Mr. Hoffmeister just made one window graphic."

So his reasoning is because it makes you think its an old BMW, so instead for the new 4er, Dukec would like you to think its an old Audi A5 or Chevy Camaro from the window graphic

I agree If the M2C didn't have that sad hood shut line, it'd be a perfect design!

This guy is just a sketch guy. A designer knows how to preserve and reiterate in a modern design language the heritage.
If I will ever met him in person all I will tell him is that he is a failure as a designer.

As I said before "Damage" Dukec destroyed the brand.

Obviously, the BMW kidney grille has been open to interpretation over decades from various designers but one can't help but feel they missed an opportunity to incorporate something like this that isn't so, garish.

Prominent, distinctive and instantly recognizable but still overtly sporty...

"The front of the new BMW 4 Series Coupe is a clear statement on the road. The striking vertical kidney grille and the iconic double headlights create a daring and confident identity."

Translation:

Our primary market, China, will delight in the assured knowledge that everybody who looks upon this new BMW 4 Series Coupe will know what they drive, and that BMW is the standard for status symbols.

The CSL Concept! I genuinely love this thing, vertical grilles and all. It seemed at one point this was to be the new M2, not so sure anymore with the leaks we've seen recently.

SabineBimmer hit the nail on the head, proportionality is why the older grilles (and the 8 series) work so well, and even though vertical the CSL concept has it in spades. Here's some reminder shots from the "street" version:

Thank you for the nice illustration of the kidney evolution. I just missing the E24 front which I like most. E9 is second imo.

Exactly.

Dukec is not what BMW needs right now, if ever. I've been part of these forums for a number of years and I always review the posts about quarterly sales and if I'm not mistaken, I believe that BMW steadily had increased growth and profit margins during Biermann's reign. It is a damn shame that they lost him. Whatsoever thou soweth.

well, this is proof that they are really having a lot of problems and backlash because of these grills. They are without saying admitting that they are not even convince themselves of this so they are trying to convince others trying to tell people this is actually how the BMW grills were.
