well lets think about that.

consider these points:

1. Porsche's 911 has 12 different variations of models so of course they're will be more of them out there. If you compare the numbers of Carrera S and you'll see they are probably pretty damn close.

2. Maybe that says something about the Porsche, more people agree with each other and when looking for that kind of high end sports car, they end up picking Porsche because its a better car than the rest. If his dad wanted to buy a car to be original, he'd probably scrap both BMW and Porsche and get a Lotus or Aston Martin or something.

3. Like they OP said, they are 2 cars that really aren't comparable in many ways other than the fact that they both are fast as hell. They are both most certainly two great high end cars but almost two different to match up together and compare side by side... its more of a do you want to go one way or another on what you want kinda thing.

thats my 2 cents

Sure it has a stiffer ride, and you might take it a bit slower over speed bumps, but it can be driving harder and for long durations just like the M5. Porsche's are rocks and are very reliable and like BMW's they are ment to be driven a lot, and hard.
That was such a well thought out, spot on response.

My thought is always to do both. A few years ago, I was thinking of getting a new M3 for the commute, but I also wanted a fun roadster. In the end, I split the money and bought a 325i and Z4 2.5i, both low miles and still under warranty. (Come to think of it, I'm sort of in the same situation myself. I've got the M Coupe, and I'll be snagging an E60 this fall.)

In your dad's case, he could get an off-lease 545i for the commute and an early 997 for the same for the same money. Neither will be as balls-out as the either or situation, but the truth is few people buying either M5s or 997Ss ever drive them at 10/10ths. It's often more fun to thrash an S2000 than tootle around in a Ferrari (in as much as a Ferrari can tootle).

If he does go for the Porsche, everyone's right about waiting. The 2009 MY cars with direct injection are worth waiting for if you want a 911; having already had some Porsches, I'm sort of over them myself. (Though there's a faint whispering about the Gallardo in the back of my mind sometimes.)

The 911 is lost. Not a technology leader, not the fastest, cramped.

The only 911 that is worth considering is the GT3 only because it is good track car.

The 911 is SO unappealing on so many levels.

Don't care if you get an M5, just don't waste money on the 911

Porsche's critics always want them to innovate, create, excel. You know what their paying customers want? Another 911. They give their customers what they want, blatantly overcharge them, make a fortune, and everyone's happy.

Very sad and very true.

Like an addicts codependance with their drug dealer.

The 911 buyers will die off and Porsche will have to actually spend money to develop a sportscar instead of the monstrosities they have in development now.

M5 and 911S are both great cars.

The 911's NEED a wing, rims, and springs or coilovers to look good. The wing especially--- otherwise that droopy ass doesnt look that great IMO.

911's are soooooo underpowered from a TQ standpoint; they shine on the track where their weight and HP can be best utilized.

2009 911 taillights look like complete ass

If you want a 911 and want to stay within the price range of the M5 or 911S wait another year or two and get a used 997GT3 or a 997TT.

Ever consider a Benz CLS?

I went through this same question recently and I chose the M5 for a few reasons.

My original plan was to keep my E90 330i as a daily driver and get a 997 C2S for the weekends. Ultimately, I realized that the E90 was too small for my growing family. My son isn't even 2 years old and he was constantly kicking the back of the seat because there was so little room.

I would have had a daily driver that was somewhat impractical for my family, then a weekend car that is even more impractical. Granted, the fuel economy on an M5 is anything BUT practical, but these cars will probably disappear soon, so I better enjoy it now.

Considering the aggressive deals available on new M5's, it actually made good financial sense to go with the M5.
