2014 M5 or 2015 640d Gran Coupe?

Per the title and perhaps a crazy question for some. I'm returning the the UK after some time abroad and fancied a decent spec 640d Gran Coupe M-Sport.

Then one night after a few glasses happened upon an Orange M5, 2014. Gorgeous and in great condition.

Running costs don't matter to me as I don't do a massive mileage, performance does. Crazily insurance costs for me are the same for both, the benefit of hitting 40 I guess.

For reference I have a young daughter and other half who's also car crazy. I currently drive an F11 525d auto in NL as car taxes here are insane. Both cars are cheaper than my current one here!

Thoughts are M5 is gorgeous but a bit showy, and likely to get vandalised in London? 640 much more understated. New G30 also means the M5 is an old model...

So, thoughts? They are both easy to live with I imagine?

And now edited; which will hold value better long term? I guess the M5?? Place your bets!

The M vehicles are far more refined than the non-Ms.

Nothing understated about the 6er GranCoupe. If your budget allows, buy the M - they never disappoint. They'll hold their value longer as well.

Why are you looking at a 640d instead of an 640i?

The 640 probably won't be very fun to drive compared to the M5, but it looks very sleek and sexy. The M5 is a looker too, but in a different way. It depends on the colors you're looking at too.

You already have a 5er, so sitting inside the M5 may feel like more of the same.

Valid points guys. I'm looking at an orange M5, have seen some comments about the longevity of the engines blowing their main bearings or I think rod bearings as they are called over the other side of the pond which concerns me a bit. I know these would be isolated but I don't want a huge bill in 6 months or have to pay thousands for a warranty.

Anyway, that aside I would be looking at either an orange M5 or likely a grey or silver 640d gran coupe M-Sport. Both very different cars. I love the idea of an M5 as fuel costs don't really bother me but indeed I've had several f10's but this would easily feel like more of the same which does bother me a bit. Interior essentially the same save a few bits of matt black as I have a high end f11.

I originally loved the 6 gran coupe but am now thinking with the rising anti diesel movement here (even though this is modern and clean) it may not be the best idea, as there are virtually no petrol powered 6 series here. The 640d in real world city driving will also be very close to the M5 in terms of useable performance.

I don't think any of them will be easily tradeable to be honest as it's a limited market for these cars, whereas it's easy to sell a 5 series.

As you can see I really don't know but think a 6 would be something different so probably that.... as long as the rear headroom is acceptable. Time to go see some....

Maybe it's a European thing, but on the left coast of california, I rarely see BMW diesels. I also hate the power band of diesels, so that alone would make me choose the M5.

I wouldn't even cross shop the two, theres no question M5 is the better car here IMO.. I don't think the M5 is going to be much less flashy than a 6 series ; by design the 6 series is fancier, the 5 series blends in more

M cars are demanding on the driver. Get the 6 series if you just want to float around town. If you want to drive, the M5 is the ticket.

It's not demanding. I was testing the shift speeds and it makes like no difference driving normally over a 550i probably because it has the same displacement and stroke as the N63TU engine just the head (valves) is different? The difference is when you demand full power, the take off is great with the M.
