Wish me luck!

I've been in the Pittsburgh area for about 6 months now. When I first moved I decided to take some time off of work; try and get settled, absorb the new environment, that sort of thing. After a well deserved (in my opinion) 4 months off I started working at my current company. Everyone that interviewed me seemed very welcoming and the company appeared to be a really good fit for me. Well; I was wrong, two months in and I'm surprised this place is still in business. I'm in the manufacturing industry and always have been. Three years ago I downloaded Autocad from the company server onto my desktop. Played around with it and was noticed by the company's engineering manager. Long story short I've been drafting ever since; I love it, and I'm good at it. Unfortunately in this industry, that's not the only thing the draftsman does and frankly; I'm tired of manufacturing. It was great when I was young but it's time to move on. So tomorrow I have an interview with a drafting firm!!! If I get this job I will get to draw all day every day and the drawing will be different! Not the same old machinery/parts every day. I will get to learn other drafting programs and use some pretty cool equipment for drafting/rendering existing buildings. I'm super excited and just wanted to share this with you guys. Other than that I hope everyone has a great Tuesday!!

Garage List
Remember, when they ask that question, "Why do you want to work for us"? The best answer is always, "So I can take over your position in record time".

I work in manufacturing and do a lot of AutoCad for prototype tooling, definitely fun messing around with AutoDesk, Inventor is pretty sick too. Manufacturing does kind of suck, depending on what your position is. Mine is laid back, easy schedule, etc., so it sounds like you were on the shitty end of the stick.

Good luck at your new spot.

I loved the old shop. Everyone was family there, my schedule was decent, and I knew the business. This place though; phew. It's...different.

Thank you, though. What does your company manufacture, primarily?

Make sure to ask if there's any flexibility in the drug test policy

Good luck.

I've used Inventor briefly. I'm more of an art modeler. I use 3DMax, Maya and Blender.

I've seen it referenced in a lot of job listings here. I've been meaning to look into it.

Internal engine components like valve lifters and ball plungers, some supercharger components, and some transmission parts. A lot of high volume output machines, parts come out every 4 seconds and is machining 16 stations at a single time. Also do some cold forming, honing, ID/OD grind, hard milling, etc.

Sounds like a sweet gig. Must have a decent size shop. How did you end up in manufacturing?

Describe a time when you had a difficult situation and what did you do to overcome it?

When I was homeless, I applied for a job at a small mom and pop shop back in Detroit doing part time cleaning the shop. Started learning basics like surface grinding, centerless grinding, etc. Picked everything up really fast, so they started having me do setups and programming on Fanuc wire EDM's, Seiki lathe, Hurco VMC's, Anka cutter grinders, and a few other CNC's. Then started doing AutoCad for prototype tooling that we'd make for customers.

Now I'm the customer buying the products I used to physically make.

That's an awesome story! That's very cool that you went from being homeless to now. My mfg origin story isn't quite as inspiring. I did however start as the shop bitch-boy and worked my way up. That was a big factor as to why I loved my old shop so much.

It was rough, but a little tenacity can go a long way. A lot of people start out that way, and I really didn't want to leave the shop I was at, but money and new experiences are worth it. I actually purchase tools from the shop I used to work at now, so in the end, it's a small world in manufacturing.

Depending on where you end up, you'll start meeting people from all over the place, that in some way, will know a ton of people you know one way or another.
