Too bad Darwin can't be faster and more selective....

This is actually pretty timely since there's a thread about the challenges of raising an infant.

I'm on my way home from Toys R Us after buying some diapers and toys for my daughter. I get behind this car which is driving all sorts of slow and constantly swerving towards the right into the curb. I'm stuck behind this idiot for a couple of lights till we get to an intersection where there's one of these Liberty Tax people waving down people. I see this little hand reach out the window waving back at the Liberty Tax person. The oh crap goes through my mind when I couple the realization there's a kid in a car driven by some idiot. I immediately think this airhead is probably texting on their phone. Light turns green and we drive down the road. Again, she's swerving all over the place. I can now see the tell tale head bobbing of the typical brain dead individual that does something like this while driving.

When we got to an area where there were two lanes, I couldn't hold back my anger any more. I change lanes over to the right drive up next this woman's car, and yell out the window. "Is your phone more important than your child?" She looks at me with this WTF look, and I proceed on.

If she doesn't feel that driving is a serious matter and thinks her life isn't as important than whatever is happening on that stupid phone, that's one thing. But to drag her kid who has no say in the matter into her stupid decisions....

Ok. I'm done venting.....

Does your area have any laws against texting and driving? If so, you could call police at their non emergency number to report a driver in a situation like that.

Good point. We do. But by the time the police get out to investigate, she would have been long gone. She was turning left into a residential neighborhood after I yelled at her.

I've learned to accept that some people just are dumb as fuck.

You can try and teach them, but they don't learn.

She'll learn when that cute little kid is flung out of his seat and his head smashes the windshield, killing him.

She probably won't be texting and driving after that...

Then again, dumbasses never cease to amaze me...

They passed the no-texting-while-driving law here and it is largely ignored. Then they passed the no-handheld-cellphone-while-driving and it is a joke. I still see 4 or 5 people a day gabbing away on their cells. It'll stop when they start treating those offenses like drunk driving with the same consequences. Although with the cops being just as bad as everyone else when it comes to cell phones, enforcing that might be tough.

What burns me is when I see someone in a new MB or BMW or Cadillac using their cell phone when I know those cars have a hands-free option. People are just too dumb to set it up, I guess.

With people like this, I just hope they don't kill anyone else when they eventually swerve into oncoming traffic, or don't see a stop sign ahead and plow into someone... Unfortunately in this case, the baby could be the one who suffers most.

People who text and drive are my worst nightmare when I'm on the motorcycle. Already too many close calls and these people continue to do this shit putting my life in danger.

I had a bike for years when I lived in MA. When I first got it I'd have maybe 2 or 3 close calls a year. Then it got really crowded in that area and I started having 2 or 3 close calls every time I rode. That's when I gave up the bike. And that was before texting and widespread cellphone use.

I'd say on average, I deal with about 2 to 3 incidents if I ride for a full week to work. A lot of it is people not looking in their mirrors before changing lanes causing me to go on the shoulder, pulling out in front of me going 25mph under the speed limit..., it's almost never ending.

Would be nice if there was an automatic cell block in cars forcing people to not text and drive. Then again, I've seen people drive just as bad eating and driving.

To be honest, I do text and get on Facebook/Twitter while I'm driving, almost on a daily basis, but when I do, I hold my phone up next to the windshield and constantly switch my eyes back and forth between the road and the screen, so I'm not swerving or veering all over the road. Not an excuse, but still. And I'm definitely not on it for long, especially not multiple traffic lights. Just a bad habit of mine and a lot of people my age. Again, no excuses for it, just the way it is.

I've been contemplating getting a bike for years, and every time I read something like the above it always puts me off the idea.

Uhf- tell me about it! Did you know splitting lanes on the freeway is actually safer than being in a lane during stop-and-go? It's because all these inattentive drivers only see the car in front of you and wind up rear-ending you!

I think motorcycles have 30x the fatalities per mile as cars, and about 20x when equipped with ABS so if I do ever get one it'll have ABS. I'd LOVE to have a motorcycle. My GF used to be into it, too. Drivers in my town suck though, so it's just too much risk for the reward. I still get the itch sometimes though. I'd love an S1000, YZF or an enduro bike, and she wants a Ducati Monster.

Dude, get the fuck off the phone in the car for fucks sake. Nothing is that important and it only takes a split second to ruin someones life. I really hope you get your head on straight. You think you're fine, but I can put money down that you're one of the people that don't see me at the last minute. Instead, I have to LOOK OUT FOR YOU? I have no fucking safety equipment, you have a full sized coupe, of course you'll end up on the better end of the deal.

I wouldn't let it defer you, unless you are in heavy traffic areas constantly like M_Six noted. As many opportunities I've been in that were a sketchy, I'd be hard pressed to actually sell the bike. No feeling like riding.

She has good taste. That's the bike I've wanted for years. The new Ducati Scrambler has also caught my interest.

I wouldn't doubt it. I personally don't split lanes, but I will ride the shoulder if shit looks like a mess.

Drivers are going to suck no matter what town your in, just have be to able to identify and navigate around the idiots. YZF's are great bikes for regular riding if you don't want to be hunched over reaching for the handle bars. More upright positional seating, pretty comfortable actually. I wouldn't get an Enduro, you'd be disappointed in the lack of power almost immediately.

Yeah- I kinda like a bit more upright for more general use. Less tiring and you can see around easier, and you still have the monstrous engine. I know the enduro would suck on the street, but I have TONS of interesting trails in my area (New Mexico). You don't have to worry about drivers out there, either.

New YZF, Ninja 650/1000 had the best seating position for me since I ride 1 to 2 hours one way for work depending on what city I'm staying in. I had a ZX10 for a while, but after playing ice hockey for so long, my back will hurt if I sit in an awkward position for more than 5 minutes, started getting unbearable so I traded it in for the 650.

Shit, if you have trails, buy a used 125 or something and get a 600 sport bike. I'm telling you from experience, an enduro sounds like a fun all around package, but on the street, I felt like it barely kept up with a Honda Civic. That shit gets old real fast.

NC drivers are some of the worst I've ever seen. A close second to VA drivers. Sorry, but it's the truth. No turn signals, swerving in and out of lanes, talking/texting/Facebooking, using both hands to shove a Bojangles biscuit in their face. I hate it.

LOL- my garage is already stuffed! I like the idea of just getting on and going instead of having to load up a trailer full of gear. The BMW F-series is interesting, and has ABS. I see 'em used for CHEAP.
