Yes. Lived in Europe for five years and moved back this past year. As previously mentioned they have more prerequisite training and driving still seen as a privilege and not a right. They predominantly drive manual transmission cars as well, which, from a learning to drive perspective, makes for a more engaged driver. This isn't to say there aren't idiot drivers in Europe, there are plenty. (They're called Italians). A good gauge is how they efficiently use the passing lane and promptly GTFO after they pass. The US is so bad with random people constantly hanging out in the left lane and backing up traffic, causing passive-aggressive accidents.

I live in Germany right now and i can tell you with absolute certainty that you can find idiot drivers everywhere. I mean this. even the Germans. You can argue the ratio between the idiot vs. sensible drivers all day long but it only takes one to fuck it all up for the rest. German autobahns are not forgiving when it comes to idiot drivers and mistakes done while driving on them. I've lost count of all the accidents around my area because of Geisterfahrer (wrong way drivers), Under-powered vehicles lane changing on to a fast lane without looking, All the Michael Schumacher wanna-bes that have died on Autobahns as well as back roads causing 15km or longer traffic jams.. Dont get me started with motorcycle drivers... even with their top notch 3k euro driving schools and training, you get almost as many accidents and near-death experiences as the US and Canada.

In the end it is all cultural and every where i go i see one trend. Monkey see - Monkey Do...

I consider myself a good driver by US Standards and i still do and when i moved to Europe i quickly discovered that the U.S style of driving was not fitting in Germany and i quickly had to adapt or else risk it.

Likewise when i drive in the US, the German style of driving quickly becomes cumbersome and sometimes dangerous and again i have to adapt quickly.

The question becomes not so much as who is the best driver which the answer is not as black and white as most think but rather am i driving the right way and how does society requires me to drive.

If i had to generalize and shotgun it by country i would say that the German speaking (Germany, East of France, German-Speaking Switzerland, Austria, Lichtenstein, German-speaking Luxembourg and Czech West countries drive the best and are more predictable. You start going outwards from those countries and you will find out quickly that drivers in those "European"
countries are just as "bad" if not worse than drivers in the U.S in their own European ways...

I can attest to this, I too, live in Germany and I seriously thought they were better drivers with all the damn rules and laws here. However, that is not the case and there's just a lot ofhorrible drivers in Germany as well.

Yup. It takes two years here in the good ole north to get a full license (7 months minimum) and you get one only with a manual.

Oh, and if you fuck up here, you'll die in a ditch screaming for your momma. That works too.

Here is my personal opinion driving in the USA and Europe-

USA - Drivers have absolutely no idea what they are doing and are completely untrained.
Europe - Drivers are crazy, take some serious risks and have serious EGO problems on the road... by default, the better car has to be faster no matter what.

European women are horrible. You guys would trash cars like we do if you were stuck with one of our bitches.

Americans can't drive for shit for sure, but you're cool with parking on a freeway. If we had your kind of traffic jams people would die in very creative ways very fast.


Oh, and back to European women. The older we get, the more horrible risk takes our men turn in to. Someone here told about us cutting lights through petrol stations: I can totally see my husband doing this to get the fuck away from me. In his case he would be using a bicycle since i don't believe in letting men drive at all.

Yes, Euros are better drivers (as a generality not an entirety). US could use better training practices, but I think it's only gotten worse as more and more amenities are added to the car that's reducing the amount of attention people are actually putting out there.

Hell even on my motorcycle I was ran off the road because a dude in a Range didn't look at the blind spot indicator light before merging over.

There's a lot of carelessness, but it's funny how you can see drastically different driving characteristics from state to state (I'd imagine similar for EU). Not to mention, the US we literally travel everywhere via vehicle, EU there's better public transport and most cities are close and people just walk or ride scooters / bikes. Pretty different demographics and use roads.

Well from what I've heard about Germany....it's much more predictable. People tend to follow the rules (no passing on the right, etc) and this allows everyone to drive faster because they understand what the other shit bag is going to do.

On top of this, europe tends to have much higher standards for what can be road worthy; I feel like this in itself helps avoid a ton of accidents.

So to answer your question: maybe. Europeans also do not get to have big boy toys as much as us; V8's are a dime a dozen here. Most people only have to wield what like 150hp there? lol
