Armistice Day November 11th

World War I, with its massive bloodletting on all sides, ended on November 11th of 1918 with an armistice -- and eventually a peace treaty in 1919. That armistice came to be celebrated in France as a national holiday, in the Commonwealth as Remembrance Day and in the USA as Veteran's Day.

Many nations were aghast at the massive loss of life during World War I. Unfortunately, it was but a prelude to an even greater loss in World War II from 1937 to 1945.

I saw this a while back and told my wife, we attend Remembrance Day services every year. I went to the Royal Canadian Legions website and checked this out. They are the official position on all things to do with the poppy and they say to wear it on the left over your heart. Either way the important thing is to remember. Peace.

If you are ever in Ottawa, the WWI memorial/Peace Tower at the Parliament Building is well worth a visit.

Nov 11 is also an official holiday in Belgium. Flanders fields were an important WWI battleground. I recall classes at school in the 70s tackling the topic, with battle gear for days on end on display in the class room and a very old war veteran telling us his WW war stories and some piece of advice. We were all allowed to test a WWI gas mask to experience first-hand how barely breathable that protection was against 'mustard gas' in the trenches during WWI.

But also look at what happened during WWII. Here's a well-presented 18 minute video of 2016 featuring many chilling statistics about the human toll. Worth to see - humbling. The end of the video is outdated because of ongoing geopolitical events happening as we speak (not going into politics). But the message ain't. Feel free to show it to kids too.
