To answer your original question, yeah, life sucks. You get dealt shitty things sometimes. But you move on! If you sit and dwell in the shit of your past, you'll, well, sit and dwell in the shit of your past. You need to make a conscious choice to MOVE ON.

You also need to learn to live without alcohol.

I never thought I had a drinking problem. No DUI's, not a mean drunk, never did anything stupid, etc etc etc. However, when you look back and realize that you've gotten drunk every night of the week/month/year for 10 years, you stop and think yeah, that could be a problem...

I quit around 6 years ago. I still miss it terribly from time to time, but just can't go back there.

Maybe if I get a terminal illness I'll have a nice cognac and a Sam Adams near the end, but until then, I just can't touch it.

It's not always easy, but you suck it up and make a choice not to do it. If you're one of the ones who can cut back or drink socially, great. I just can't, so I don't.

Never went to any meetings, never did any programs, etc. Just made the decision and lived with it. Kinda like how I quit smoking about 10 or 12 years ago...

Find another way to deal with stress.. boxing bag? go for a run, run the stress out in sweat.. join an aggressive sport, channel your problems to something else and translate it into energy...

It's a day by day thing. Sometimes you lose to it and the same thoughts pop in your head: How do I make this day more interesting; how can I escape or enlighten myself? I don't have a real problem; it's just that I am conflicted, but thanks for the replies.

If there's enough beer, I don't have a drinking problem.

Remember, no one likes a quitter. Personally, I can't fully trust a man who will not eat meat and can't have a beer.

I drink, I get drunk, I fall down, NO problem

OP...face facts...you are a problem drinker and need to quit...the fact that you can't reinforces the truth that you are a problem drinker

I often question my own reasons for drinking. Just last night I was hanging out with friends having a few drinks and all of a sudden I've drank half a bottle of Jameson and am making some regrettable decisions. Just go a couple of days without drinking and see how you feel, if it is really hard to do then you know there is a real serious problem. But even drinking in moderation is rarely done for the mightiest purposes
