What strut fits what? Are E60 struts, non-X drive mix and match with other E6x?

What strut fits what? Are E60 struts, non-X drive, physically interchangeable with other E6x models?
Thinking about 6 or 7 series take-offs that would have firmer valving than the lighter 5 series valving.

If you look at Bilsteins on Shock warehouse you will find they do 3 different grades of struts - touring (OEM),heavy duty and sport. So rather than guessing about interchangeability why not just go up a grade or two from touring.
Alternatively KW variant 3 is fully adjustable but $$$$
