The Big 3

Should the government bail them out?

I personally agree with the house and think that they should not see a penny until they come up with a new business model which shows some potential of success.

I think that their cars are made in an extremely bad way and depreciate much faster than many other makes and models. Not to mention that their reliability is sub-par at best.

That said I also cannot imagine how the government would let them fall apart. Hundreds of thousands jobs would be lost, further deteriorating our current economic crisis.

What do you think?

i was for bailing them out at first, but now i'm not so sure. seems like reorganization would be better than just giving them money to continue wasting it.

Let them fail! The CEO's are not willing to change their unsucessful business model so why should I donate my tax dollars for their blind leadership.

If we do bail them out there better be a tax payer benefit when and if they turn around the sinking ship.

Not trying to flame, but it'd be nice to keep the topic contained to a fewer number of threads. Means there's less repeating of the same thing.

While I agree with the candyass Russian OP that the automakers should have to present a clear, concise and workable plan for a return to profitability, it irks me to no end that a majority of people I hear comment on the issue are of the opinion that the automakers should be left to fail.

To those people I ask this: What did the automakers do to that caused their current situation that was WORSE than what the Banks, Mortgage Brokers and rating agencies did to create the financial crisis? How do you designate one as "worthwhile to save" and let the other one die?

Were the big three irresponsible in product planning and development? YES
Were the big three slow to react to market decisions? YES
Were the big three irresponsible in regards to extension of credit? YES

But if you are bailing out the banks...you best be bailing out the automakers as well.

The taxpayers are going to be on the short end of the stick no matter if you save them or let them die. Therefore, we might as well pick the poison that allows some innocent people to save thier jobs and livlihoods.

I am for a bailout that forces bankruptcy, gets rid of the union altogether, and forces GM down to Chevy and Caddy, and Saturn. no Pontiac, Buick, clones.

They also have to get rid of 80% of the dealers.

They have a lot of overhead, crappy products, and duplication of effort.

None of the big 3 will survive long term with union baggage.
