There are colleges that are way more expensive than what a student can make. Granted, hopefully there will be grants and scholarships. I too paid for my own college. My parents weren't financially capable of paying my tuition.

Having no wife or kids (that I'm aware of) makes it a lot easier to afford such toys

wealthy people don't invest in cars. there is no "investing" in cars. rich people already know this... they buy, keep for 6 months, get a new one.
I work with ultra high net worth (20M+ in investable assets) people and they barely spend more than 50-60k on a new car. They usually use it for 5+ years.

Most people flipping cars like that are the under 1-2M in assets who want to be perceived as ultra high net worth.

Davis said it best - make sacrifices with one's income.

There are things that I have 0 interest in purchasing and don't value it at all. Therefore, I will not spend a penny on it.

However, there are things that I value that I will spend WAY too much money on it.

Like I tell my wife - would you rather have 10 - $10 shirts or 2 - $50 shirts? Personally, I'd rather have 1 - $100 shirt.

Cost of living play a HUGE role in this. You living in Orange County like I do, where the houses range from lower middle class, to some of the most exclusive and wealthy neighborhoods in the US should know what I mean.

I think college is a little overrated anyway.
Besides the most well known dropouts, Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Michael Dell, there have been other dropouts that made enormous fortunes as well. It's the childs own brain that has to do the learning, and if they're self motivated, it doesn't really matter how good/bad the teachers are.

My degree is in Accounting, yet I'm a computer programmer for the last 15 years. People who are driven can self-teach if given the resoources/opportunities.

That guy who Will Smith played who was homeless with a son and slept in subway train station bathrooms and such, and managed to become a multi-millionaire stock broker comes to mind.

As long as companies aren't telling applicants F and U, we're only hiring from Stanford, Harvard, etc.... then I don't think college is that big a deal in holding a motivated person back from success of some meaningful measure.

Kids in dirt slums with an internet connection and a laptop can write software for Apple/Samsung phones and sell them on the app stores, and make fortunes. These days, there's not much holding anyone back from success except their own motivation.

I have a BS in Kinesiology and Biomechanics and I was going to go for my Masters in Physical Therapy. I ended up in the film industry and have been there since. It's not exclusively which degree my child chooses to go for in college, it's that he will be exposed to people who are educated and motivated who might be friends for life. I also believe I learned more about myself and how to think in my elective classes. It's there that I found that I loved to write and express ideas through pictures, art, words, and music. I didn't know these things in high school because I didn't have the chance to be exposed to them. College is a journey not everyone has to or will take, but it's a good way to broaden your horizons if you have the will. Plus I drank a lot of alcohol and did a lot of drugs so that was fun.

The most valuable classes I ever took were in logic and philosophy.

The hilarious part is that most colleges don't even offer classes in logic, yet in my mind, logic should be required classes for every student in america by 7th grade. The fact that that's left out of the curriculum is insane.
I'd make it a criminal offense for any school administration that refuses to include classes in logic.

That and it should be a felony for the parents to indoctrinate kids with religitardation before they have been taught critical thinking skills. Victimizing them like that when they are so ill equipped to defend themselves with logical, rational, reasoned arguments is really sickening.

YES!! The logic and philosophy classes are the classes that I will STRONGLY encourage my son to take. Probably the top of my list of favorite and valuable classes I ever took! To the unindoctrinated, it's not about which philosopher said what or theories on life and existentialism, it's about the thought process and logic of language and reason! If everyone in the world took a good logic and philosophy class the world would be a better place.

Well these days everyone can learn a lot on the internet for free.
I believe Stanford offers an Intro to Logic course for free.

This. The amount of money that people spend on shit like going to bars 3 nights a week, getting manicures and pedicures every week, Starbucks coffee twice a day... it adds up in a big way.

Heh... I feel blessed to hate coffee with a passion, and bars as well.
I don't drink alcohol or smoke.
Starbucks and their ilk can go eff themselves.
