I'm in my 50s, and would absolutely love to have an M2.
Screw SUVs, vans, etc.

Two things.

Best luxury focused car I have owned was our Cadillac XTS Platinum. I really liked that car and for the price at that time it was a great deal. Super comfortable seats, amazing sound system, everything was wrapped in leather and I was very surprised how good the ride and handling were for such a large land yacht. That being said it was luckily CPO because it was at the dealer a lot. No major issues but lots and lots of little stuff. I will say the Cadillac dealer experience has been probably the best of any of the brands I've owned.

If that's too old man for you (I owned it a few years ago and I'm in my late 30s now so) then I would go with the Tesla. Model Y or Model 3. For all the whining people do about build quality etc and while there are definitely down sides with Tesla. I think it's a fantastic car. I bought mine used with 12k miles so maybe the previous owner fixed stuff, but I haven't really had any big issues with the car or the build quality. Honestly my expectation were low considering all the bitching I hear about build quality. No none car person (and probably a lot of car people) would not be able to point out and "build quality" issues on my car. Maybe some panel gaps are bigger than they should be and what not but the car is perfectly fine. I found all the materials in the interior to be of better quality than I was expecting, while it's a spartan interior, nothing IMO feels cheap.

All the materials feel nice, I love the fake leather they use (at least on the white interior) it's very soft and nice feeling. The sound system is amazing, the tech is awesome (if you like tech) and being able to plugin in your garage and never having to go to a gas station, having a full "tank" everyday when you get up is awesome. Plus almost no maintenance required and should hopefully be more reliable (drivetrain) that any gas car.

Downsides are Tesla service sucks. At least the service center I went to was a total cluster fuck with a bunch of young kids seemingly running it disastrously. However your center may be better. Also it's a very techy car. If you don't like tech stuff probably not for you.

I'd rather get the bus than drive anything other than an M of any kind. kia? must be kidding.
Suv's are fine for 80+ with back trouble and doing an emergency manoeuvre on the highway in one of those can turn it into a football

Not with the way people in Missouri drive. I'd like to remain among the living for a while. But I miss my old GSX-R 750.

Yep, and there are plenty of great examples at or under the OP’s price range. I love my Macan Turbo. I paid $63k last year, it now has 47,000 miles, runs wonderfully, is as fast or faster than most cars and has an adjustable suspension. Also, the seats (get 14 or 18 way seats) are very comfortable and easy to find the right settings. Also there’s memory for both sides (driver and passenger), at least on my Turbo. No issues whatsoever so far and it’s our go to vehicle simply because it’s luxurious, comfortable and roomy enough to do just about anything you want to do. You don’t have to sacrifice by driving a Macan. Now we do have another sporty car to drive but the Macan is a wonderful substitute.

I turn 60 next year and plan on going kind of the opposite direction. My plans are to go back to basics and get an ND2 Miata.

I have been taking pix of cars in graveyards for many years. Some of my very best pix have been there. I find it peaceful, serene, and always well kept.

Why settle for one? I turned 50 this year and still have a easy to get into and out of SUV as a DD and a little super low grunt to get in and out of but still fun to drive car for weekends and sunny days.

Your old as fuck (like me) so why settle? You'll be dead soon - enjoy.

I can speak to the Honda. I have a 2.0T Touring (current gen) as a DD. It's comfortable, reasonably fast and has a decent stance. No issues, 2 years, about 20K miles and just runs. Around town, I get about 21-22mph and on road trips, I can get 34-36mpg.

The engine is also tunable. Hondata or Ktuner sell tunes that give you a nice bump in power (250hp to about 290/300 ish based on fuel etc.). 0-60 is about 5.6 ish stock so pretty decent. As a DD, it clearly is more than enough (note that this is the 2.0T that is in the Type R with some smaller turbos).

Suspension is softer of course, but I think Honda cars tend to be a little better in drive feel than the average Japanese brand (I heard Mazda is similar). The car comes stock with 19s... not harsh to me (but I also have an M3 so take that with a grain of salt).

Comfort wise, I'd highly recommend getting the Touring. You get Head Up display, navigation, telematics on your phone (Honda has an app now similar to BMW with fully fleshed out features like service reminders, geolocation, security features etc.) . You have to subscribe though.. ( I think its about 120 per year for all the features). Has everything you need, Carplay, Spotify but isn't wireless.

I think value wise, if you want a reliable, decently powered sedan with all the up to date creature comforts with reliability and a touch of sporty driving, this should be right up there.

Feel free to PM me if you have other questions.

Edit:
I forgot to add that if you can negotiate, you can get one around $33K before tax, coupled with the fact these things depreciate so slowly, it's truly a great value. BUT if you're looking for something you won't get bored with, I think that's difficult as eventually we all get bored with our cars .

For my 70th birthday I bought an M2. 50 is nothing.

I love my M2. And have zero plans on getting rid of it. It is my DD and always puts a smile face. I can't see owning a larger car or SUV.

While the 3-series no longer feels "visceral" or "engaging" enough for me, I think it would check the boxes for you OP. It's definitely more comfort-oriented and daily drivable than 3-series than the models before 2012. And on that note, the A4/S4 has always been a great daily driver. C300 is too small and boring to drive, and the C43 is too stiff and unbecoming of a Merc in my opinion (with a cheap feeling cabin).

Hear me out on this...I currently have a new Lexus ES as a loaner car and I am incredibly impressed with it. It steers quickly, handles well for a mid-size FWD car, and the steering is somehow tighter than most BMWs. Pretty shocking stuff, but you should take one for a spin. Then there is always the heavily refreshed Lexus IS that is coming to dealers soon. It will be sportier than the ES but in my experience the 3rd gen IS still does NVH well and doesn't beat you up.

I'd also like to second a CPO Macan S. My father is 57 and is a tad overweight and very unathletic, so getting in and out of sedans started to get difficult for him. Nobody is making a sedan as fun to drive as his old E90 3-series either, so he opted for a Macan S and finds it to be a great car. It strikes the perfect balance between sporty/engaging to drive and comfortable. It's not floaty and wallowy like a G05 X5, instead it's firm enough to make you feel "in control."
