can someone please explain the difference between photoshop and lightroom? what can you do in lightroom which you cant in ps? what unique tools or features make lightroom useful?

ease of use, and a far more friendly RAW editing program plus good photo organization as it can import from your camera and just put it in folders for you.

photoshop is good for the post processing and editing the photo, but lightroom is good for checking proper white balance and adjusting the curves etc without having to know the ins and outs of a much larger robust program

Another way to explain the difference is lightroom/aperture are more for global image editing while photoshop allows you to work on the pixel level. They both go hand in hand to be honest. If you are shooting an event and have 500 photos to process, you'll want to use lightroom/aperture to organize and do global adjustments. For the hero photos (the ones that you want to do extra post work because they are the best photos of the bunch), you'll want to work on them in photoshop because you have so much more control on the pixel level.

do you guys do a lot of processing on the photos? I try not to do too much and just let my glass/shooting take care of my photos..

Recently I found that HDR seems to be especially popular on e90post that I dont see anywhere else. (not as much anyway).

They look nice (the HDRs), but sometimes I just think they are too much if all of the pics are HDR?

I agree with you. HDR can be done well, but I haven't seen many examples of it o this site...the potm on photoforum was the best example of hdr I've seen in a while...I'll find the link.

As far as my own photos, I pretty much stick to RAW file adjustments, unless I'm trying to get a certain effect which can't be done without extra work.

i also have questions (noob to dslr's)
what settings in M-mode do you shoot:
1) very sunny days
2) cloudy days
3) nights

i ask this because i find myself shooting the first pic in auto to see what the cam selects for settings and then i tweak them a bit on M-mode.

ill appreciate all your guys' help, and im really hungry to learn more.

I never shot with film and am not a purist in any way. I strongly feel that the final image is most important and a photographer should do whatever it takes to get the best final output. I do my best to take the best photo initially (good glass, attention to composition/lighting, focus, etc), but never stop there. Most of my images go through post work (and usually undetectable by anyone) to add depth, remove distractions, or to set a mood.

With that said, anyone use any special tools/filters for their processing? I stumbled across Totally Rad Actions (http://www.gettotallyrad.com/) a few months ago and it has become a vital part of my post work. I HIGHLY recommend checking it out. Take a look at the "recipes" (http://gettotallyrad.com/recipes/) section to see user-submitted photos and how they used the filters to achieve that particular look.

I always say this whenever the topic of HDR comes up, but just like any post work, it can be done well or overdone. HDR isn't a look, it's a technique. It has a bad rap because most people make HDRs look very unnatural and overdone. In some cases the hyper-real fantasy look works, but yes, when done on too many photos, it gets old quick. However you can create HDR images that are subtle and 99% would never even know it was an HDR. It's a great tool that solves lighting problems in many scenarios.

80% of my shots are with a telephoto, like a 70-200mm.
The rest are wide-angles, like 17-40mm or in the case of cropped DSLRs, 10 or 12mm.

Single photo yielded better results for me when I was on my D300. Maybe I don't know how to bracket properly...
